Boston College flies into Tallahassee

(Sports Network) - The Florida State Seminoles try to reestablish themselves as one of the elite teams in the ACC this weekend when they host the 22nd-ranked Boston College Eagles from Tallahassee. It hasn't been a typical dominate Bobby Bowden team in Tallahassee this year, as FSU enters the game with two losses already and out of the national rankings. Still, the Seminoles have plenty of time and firepower to turn things around and they showed that last weekend in a 51-24 thumping of Duke. It was the 15th straight win over the Blue Devils by FSU, which improved to 4-2 overall and an even 2-2 in league play. The team now returns back home, where it has posted a 2-1 record thus far. As for BC, it has quietly gone about its business this year and if not for a last second-touchdown by North Carolina State, the team would be undefeated. Last week, the Eagles knocked off Virginia tech 22-3 to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in league play. It was the second straight win by BC, which will now try to improve on its 1-1 ledger on the road. With regards to the all-time series, FSU owns a 3-1 advantage over BC, including a 28-17 triumph a year ago.

The Eagles don't possess one of the more explosive offenses around, but they certainly are one of the more effective ones, averaging 25.7 ppg and 356.7 total. The offense has had a majority of its success through the air (234.8 ypg), while rushing for a respectable 121.8 ypg. Last weekend BC gained just 264 yards of total offense against Virginia Tech, but that was all it needed in a 22-3 victory. Quarterback Matt Ryan led the way as he threw for 174 yards and a pair of scores on 16-of-29 pass attempts. Ryan has had a rather solid campaign for the Eagles thus far, completing 59.5 percent of his throws for 1,399 yards with nine touchdowns and just three interceptions. But Ryan injured his foot in the first half of last week's game and is listed as a game-time decision. His main targets this season have been Kevin Challenger and Tony Gonzalez, who have combined for 46 catches, 522 yards and eight touchdowns. Last week it was Challenger's turn to shine, as he pulled in three balls for a team-high 45 yards and two touchdowns. As for the ground game, it is paced by L.V. Whitworth, who has amassed 381 yards behind a 4.3 ypc average this season.

The Eagles have been stingy on the defensive side of the ball this season and are holding their opponents to 16.7 ppg and 338.8 total ypg. The unit has had a majority of its success against the run (99.3 ypg) and has also done a solid job in forcing 15 turnovers and the same number of sacks. Last week BC put forth one of its best defensive efforts of the season, limiting Virginia Tech to just three points and only 181 total yards. The defense gave up only 33 yards on the ground, while recording four turnovers and three sacks. Jolonn Dunbar had eight stops and an interception in the win and Kevin Akins added his third and fourth sacks of the season. On the year, Dunbar leads the Eagles with 47 stops, including 23 solo.

With two 50-plus point efforts in the last three games, the Seminoles' offense appears to be back on track and is now averaging 30.5 ppg and 347.3 total ypg. The team is rushing for 114.7 ypg and throwing for an even better 232.7 ypg, and is also converting 41.0 percent of its third down attempts. Last weekend FSU had no trouble with Duke, as it racked up 478 yards of total offense, including 157 on the ground. Antone Smith led the ground game with 81 yards and a score on just four carries, while Lorenzo Booker added 45 yards on 10 totes. The duo has accounted for nearly all of the team's rushing yards this season, totaling 587 yards between them. Quarterback Drew Weatherford, however, stole the show last weekend as he threw for 231 yards and four touchdowns on 16-of-24 pass attempts. It was clearly one of the better showings this season by Weatherford, who has completed 61.0 percent of his throws for 1,195 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. De'Cody Fagg has been his main target, catching a team-high 24 passes for 286 yards. Last weekend, Fagg pulled in seven balls for 80 yards and his first score of the year, while Gregg Carr added four receptions for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Carr now has a team-high six touchdown catches this season, although he has just 14 receptions overall.

FSU's defense has held strong all season long and is limiting its foes to 18.2 ppg and 277.0 total ypg. The Seminoles have been stout against the run (82.0 ypg), although they have lacked some big plays, forcing just nine turnovers thus far. Last weekend FSU forced a pair turnovers and sacks, in addition to holding Duke to 307 yards of total offense in a win. The team gave up just 52 yards on the ground and even scored a touchdown on a Lawrence Timmons 36-yard fumble recovery return. Buster Davis led the way for FSU with 12 stops. He has been far and away the team's best defender, as his 57 stops are nearly double that of the next closest player on the roster.

This should be a hard-fought and entertaining affair between a pair of teams that rely heavily on their defenses. FSU, however, has the edge playing at home and behind its defense and another solid game from Weatherford it should prevail this Saturday.
