Just over four minutes into the game against Texas Tech, Colorado quarterback Bernard Jackson threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Riar Greer to give the Buffs a 7-0 lead. Then, early in the second quarter Jackson tossed a 29-yard scoring pass to Jarrell Yates. Sensational placekicker Mason Crosby then nailed three consecutive field goals, including a pair from 56 and 53 yards, and Jackson capped the scoring for Colorado with a one-yard run late in the game. Hugh Charles ran for 119 yards in the win, and Jackson threw for 151 with the two scores and no interceptions. Colorado is averaging only 285.4 total ypg to rank 103rd out of 119 Division I-A teams in total offense. Jackson has only completed 50.4 percent of his passes for 712 yards in the seven games that he has played, and two of his three touchdown passes came against Tech. As for Charles, he has 504 rushing yards to his credit and is clearly the squad's best player.
Considering that the Colorado defense has been bullied at times this season by opposing offenses, it was good to see the Buffs completely dominate one of the best offensive teams in all of college football. Texas Tech managed only 276 yards of total offense and a lowly total of six points. The Red Raiders attempted 45 passes, and while 29 resulted in completions, solid tackling by Colorado forced Tech to finish with a low average of 8.4 yards per completion. Perhaps the most obvious key to victory for the Buffs was that they came up with five big takeaways, in addition to a trio of sacks. Opponents are averaging 323.0 total ypg against the Buffaloes, who have yielded 245.6 ypg through the air. Foes haven't found much running room against Colorado, which is surrendering a mere 2.5 yards per rushing attempt. Jordon Dizon has made 76 total tackles this season to pace the Buffs.
The game that had all the makings of a Disney movie in progress, but the ending was anything but happy. With his dad in the stands for the first time since he came to Oklahoma, Peterson torched Iowa State for 183 yards and two touchdowns. On the second score, a 53-yarder with 6:35 remaining in the contest, Peterson was tackled as he crossed the goal line and landed awkwardly on his shoulder. That caused the collarbone injury and there has been a great deal of speculation since the injury that the first game that Peterson's father watched him play as a collegiate may have been his last. A junior, Peterson may elect to enter the next NFL Draft, and if so he is considered worthy of a top five pick. Oklahoma is averaging 32.8 ppg this season and 396.5 total ypg, numbers that will be difficult to maintain with the nation's best runner. Peterson racked up 935 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns through six games, and he also managed a receiving score. Considering no other running back has carried the ball more than 18 times this season, there isn't an experienced player prepared to fill the void. Expect the pressure to fall on quarterback Paul Thompson, who will have to make more plays with his arm and his legs. Thompson has thrown for 1,334 yards and 10 touchdowns, and it is no secret that Malcolm Kelly is his favorite receiver. One of the top targets in the Big 12, Kelly has 23 catches for 460 yards and six touchdowns to his credit.
The Oklahoma defense was outstanding in the win over Iowa State last weekend, as the unit limited the Cyclones to one touchdown and 238 total yards. A pair of interceptions proved key to the victory, and Iowa State was only able to muster 12 first downs against a swarming defense. Through six outings, opponents are posting 18.0 ppg and 292.3 total ypg against the solid Oklahoma defense. Of the 12 touchdowns that the Sooners have surrendered, just five have come on the ground. While the pass defense has allowed some big plays, it has registered six interceptions to go along with the team's seven fumble recoveries. Oklahoma has done an outstanding job of pressuring opposing quarterbacks in the past, but the team's low total of nine sacks suggests that this year's group has taken a step back in that department. Rufus Alexander leads the Sooners with 48 total tackles, including seven TFLs.
Colorado enters this game on an emotional high, but the situation is quite the opposite for Oklahoma considering the loss of Peterson. The Buffaloes seem like a solid upset pick, but Bob Stoops is too good a coach to allow his players to suffer a letdown.
