Fresno State racked up 37 points and 487 total yards against Hawaii last weekend, so it is hard to put too much blame on the offense for the loss. Still, it should be pointed out that the Bulldogs suffered three turnovers in the clash and scored two of their touchdowns in the fourth quarter, long after the outcome had been decided. Sean Norton took the majority of the snaps for Fresno State and completed 14-of-24 passes for 225 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Marlon Moore had 100 yards receiving on only three catches and Bear Pascoe finished with 95 yards and two scores on his only two grabs. As for the ground attack, Lonyae Miller managed 113 yards and one touchdown. Through six games Fresno State is averaging 24.0 ppg and 352.5 total ypg. Of the 18 offensive touchdowns that the Bulldogs have scored, nine have come on the ground and nine through the air. Tom Brandstater has started every game at quarterback for Fresno State this season, but he gave way to Norton in the second quarter last weekend. It will be interesting to see how the quarterbacks are used against the mighty LSU defense. Dwayne Wright leads the Bulldogs in rushing with 679 yards and seven scores, while no player has more than 17 catches.
It is hard to imagine any defense playing worse than Fresno State did against Hawaii last weekend. The Bulldogs surrendered 570 total yards, 30 first downs and, most importantly, 61 of the 68 points to the Hawaii offense. The Warriors threw the ball with tremendous success, completing 37-of-44 throws for 470 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. Hawaii only ran the ball 18 times, so Fresno State knew a pass was coming on most plays and proved helpless against the aerial attack. The Bulldogs are yielding 358.0 total ypg this season, a number that places them in the middle of the pack statistically. Unfortunately, they are giving up 31.2 ppg, and that figure ranks closer to the bottom of the national charts. Perhaps the most disturbing stat of all is that opponents have 15 touchdown passes with no interceptions against Fresno State. The Bulldogs have permitted opponents to make good on 51 percent of their third down conversion attempts, another major area of concern.
LSU ranks 14th nationally in total offense, as it is racking up 417.7 total ypg. The Tigers are an even more impressive 12th in scoring offense, as they are posting 35.6 ppg. JaMarcus Russell continues to put up strong numbers under center, as he has completed 69 percent of his passes for 1,700 yards with 13 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He has a number of outstanding targets on the outside, including Dwayne Bowe who has six touchdown receptions to his credit. As for the ground attack, Charles Scott leads a deep backfield with 270 yards, and his five rushing scores trail only Jacob Hester's six. While LSU's offense is listed as one of the best nationally on paper, it should be pointed out that the team managed a grand total of 13 points against its only two quality opponents, Florida and Auburn. Russell was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week for his effort against Kentucky, as he completed 15-of-18 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Bowe was sensational in the win, as he caught six passes for 111 yards and three touchdowns. Hester added two rushing scores.
Make no mistake, LSU has one of the premier defensive units in all of college football. The Tigers are yielding only 8.6 ppg and 211.7 total ypg to rank first nationally in total defense and second in scoring defense. Against the run they are only permitting 72.0 ypg and 2.5 ypc. The pass defense has been stellar as well, allowing just three touchdowns while producing 11 interceptions. Also worthy of mention is the fact that opposing quarterbacks have completed only 96-of-203 passes against the Tigers. Darry Beckwith is tops for the unit with 40 total tackles, and Tyson Jackson leads the way with six sacks. The fact that LSU shut out Kentucky last weekend speaks to the ability of this defense. The Wildcats managed only 61 rushing yards and completed 16 of their 41 pass attempts.
LSU has played more than its share of weak opponents this season, and this weekend's game offers another opportunity for the Tigers to fill up the stat sheet. Unfortunately for Russell and company, the nation will not be impressed by a romp over the hapless Bulldogs.
