Iowa possesses a potent offensive attack that averages 29.1 ppg and 409.0 total ypg. The Hawkeyes moved the ball extremely well against Indiana and the result was a solid total of 28 points last weekend. Quarterback Drew Tate completed 23-of-40 passes for 292 yards with one touchdown and one interception. As for the ground attack, Damian Sims took the place of the injured Albert Young and ran for 94 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Sims now leads the club in carries with 83, rushing yards with 451 and rushing touchdowns with five. Regardless of whether Young plays this weekend, Iowa won't miss a beat in the running game. As for Tate, he has completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 1,481 yards with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. His favorite target, especially in the red zone, is 6-7 tight end Scott Chandler, who has made 28 catches for 310 yards and four touchdowns.
Put simply, the fact that Iowa surrendered 31 points to Indiana last weekend is unacceptable. One Hoosier receiver had three touchdown receptions in the clash, proof that the Hawkeyes didn't make the necessary adjustments as the game moved along. Currently, Indiana ranks 72nd nationally in total offense. Considering that Michigan ranks 40th, Iowa has to be much better this weekend. Through seven outings, Iowa is surrendering an average of just 18.0 ppg and 333.0 total ypg. With 15 sacks and 10 takeaways, the Hawkeyes have made a decent number of impact plays, but there is obviously room for improvement in that area. Mike Klinkenborg has recorded 73 tackles, 25 more than his closest teammate. As for Edmond Miles, who is second with 48 total stops, he has registered seven TFLs to tie Mitch King for the team lead. Keep an eye on Adam Shada, as he has registered three of the club's eight interceptions.
While Michigan scored a modest total of 17 points last weekend, the offense did enough to get the victory. Mike Hart proved to be a workhorse once again, as he carried the ball 26 times for 112 yards, marking his sixth 100-yard game of the season and 15th of his career. Hart's one-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter proved to be the game winner. Fellow junior Chad Henne played fairly well under center, completing 15-of-30 passes for 196 yards. Steve Breaston made five grabs for 79 yards, while Adrian Arrington posted a career-high with five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. Arrington picked up the slack for standout receiver Mario Manningham, who missed the contest with an injury that figures to keep him out of action this weekend as well. Michigan is averaging 31.1 ppg while gaining 372.9 total ypg. Hart has run for 906 yards and six touchdowns, and while he is more steady than spectacular, it is hard to find many players more important to their respective team than the tailback. Henne has thrown for 14 touchdowns against four interceptions while completing 59.7 percent of his passes. Manningham had nine touchdowns on just 24 catches through six games, but he will be missed this weekend.
Give the Michigan defense a ton of credit for the victory over Penn State last weekend. The Wolverines registered a season-high seven sacks in the clash and limited the Nittany Lions to minus-14 rushing yards, the best effort against the run by the program in 20 years. LaMarr Woodley stood out with three TFLs, including a pair of sacks and one forced fumble. Michigan ranks seventh nationally in total defense, surrendering just 241.2 total ypg, and the club is limiting its opponents to 13.6 ppg to place 14th in scoring defense. The Wolverines lead all Division I-A teams in run defense, as they are yielding only 32.6 ypg on the ground. Michigan forces opponents to abandon the run and take chances down the field, and that has led to 25 sacks. David Harris leads the defense with 44 total tackles, while Woodley is tops with seven sacks.
Go with Michigan in this contest, as it has the obvious advantage of playing at home. Iowa will keep things close, however, as it will be motivated after the embarrassing upset loss to Indiana last weekend.
