Last weekend, Ole Miss got the ball first in overtime and had to settle for a 37-yard field goal against Alabama, which promptly ended the game with a touchdown on its ensuing possession. BenJarvus Green-Ellis scored on a two- yard run for the Rebels in the first quarter of that contest, and Brent Shaeffer threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace midway through the fourth quarter. Green-Ellis, who has proven to be one of the SEC's most productive backs this season, was limited to 56 rushing yards on 21 attempts. As for Shaeffer, he completed 13-of-20 passes for 163 yards with no interceptions or sacks. Out of 119 Division I-A football teams, Ole Miss ranks 108th in both scoring offense (14.4 ppg) and total offense (262.9 ypg). Green- Ellis has 627 yards on the ground and five rushing touchdowns to his credit, but Shaeffer has struggled under center. The former Tennessee signal-caller transferred to Ole Miss in order to be a starter, but the fact that he has only completed 47.9 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and eight interceptions suggests that he may not be the best man for the job.
Defensively, Ole Miss did not play particularly well against Alabama last weekend. The Tide racked up 434 total yards against the Rebels, who permitted 5.4 ypc on the ground and 12.9 yards per completion through the air. With zero takeaways and two insignificant sacks, there was a glaring lack of big plays made by the defense. Opponents are scoring 23.9 ppg against Ole Miss, which is permitting 370.0 total ypg. The Rebels have allowed 20 touchdowns to opposing offenses, including 10 rushing and 10 passing scores. With only one interception this season, Ole Miss has clearly struggled in that area, and the team's total of eight sacks could certainly stand some improvement as well. Linebacker Patrick Willis is the star of the Rebels' defense, and his 73 total tackles include seven TFLs.
Make no mistake, the nation's best duo of tailbacks exists at Arkansas, as Darren McFadden and Felix Jones have proven to be unstoppable. McFadden was limited by injury early on this season, but he has turned his 107 carries into 625 yards and six touchdowns. As for Jones, he has made the most of his 49 carries, racking up 469 yards for an average of 9.6 ypc. The running of those two players has made things easier for freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain, who is 5-0 as a starter. The rookie signal caller has completed 51.1 percent of his passes for 625 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions, and while those numbers aren't sensational, Mustain has been a steady force and a surprisingly mature leader. Marcus Monk leads the receivers with 19 catches for 384 yards and three touchdowns. Last weekend, Arkansas took a break from its SEC slate to post a 63-7 victory over a weak Southeast Missouri State squad. McFadden had a pair of first-quarter touchdown runs, including a 52- yard in the game's third minute, and Jones later scampered for an 85-yard score. The Razorbacks finished that contest with 381 rushing yards, and third- string tailback Michael Smith led the charge with 116 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries. Mustain completed just 5-of-13 passes for 51 yards, but he did throw a touchdown pass and was not intercepted.
Opponents are posting 18.2 ppg and 300.5 total ypg against the Razorbacks, who have been solid defensively since the ugly loss to USC. Foes have barely completed 50 percent of their passes against the program, which has been strong against the run as well. On a down note, the Hogs have posted a low total of four takeaways through six games, an area that certainly requires improvement. Sam Olajubutu leads the defense with 68 total tackles, 28 more than his closest teammate. As for Antwain Robinson, he is tops with 5.5 sacks. Sure, Arkansas only allowed seven points to Southeast Missouri State last weekend, but it is hard to get excited about the defensive effort considering the weakness of the opponent. The Razorbacks limited their overmatched opponent to 1.3 ypc on the ground and 9-of-33 passing with three interceptions.
Arkansas is playing with a great deal of confidence, and there is no reason to expect a letdown this weekend. Put simply, the Rebels aren't good enough to go into Fayetteville and beat the Razorbacks.
