Scarlet Knights aim to slay the Panthers

(Sports Network) - A pair of schools taking aim at their seventh win of the season meet in a key Big East Conference showdown this Saturday, as the 19th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights tangle with the Pittsburgh Panthers from Heinz Field. The Knights enter the contest fresh off another solid victory, as they posted their second shutout of the season with a 34-0 blanking of Navy last weekend. It was the sixth win in the past seven road games by Rutgers, which became bowl eligible at 6-0. The team's six straight wins to begin the year is its best start since going 11-0 in 1976. As for Pittsburgh, it is also in the midst of a solid campaign and is coming off a 52-7 thumping of UCF last week. It was the fourth straight victory by the Panthers, who at 6-1 are off to their best start since beginning 7-0 in 1982. Overall, Pittsburgh has won 10 of its last 13 games dating back to last season and is also 2-0 in league play this year. The Panthers own a commanding 19-4 advantage in the all-time series with Rutgers and have won six of the last seven meetings. The Knights, however, won last season's encounter by a score of 37-29 in New Jersey.

The Knights have relied heavily on their ground game this season and for good reason, as they have been able to rush for 194.2 ypg and 16 touchdowns thus far. The consistent success on the ground and the team's ability to convert 47.0 percent of its third-down attempts is why Rutgers is averaging a solid 31.7 ppg this season. Last weekend it was the Knights' passing attack that led them to victory, as they threw for 215 yards compared to just 124 rushing in a lopsided win over Navy. Quarterback Mike Teel put forth one of his best efforts of the season in the win, as he threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns on 15-of-26 pass attempts. Teel hasn't had much of chance to showcase his talent considering the team's success on the ground and that is evident in the modest 821 yards he has thrown for thus far. Speaking of the ground attack, it is led by Ray Rice who has rushed for 899 yards and 11 touchdowns in just six games. Rice is averaging an impressive 5.5 ypc, although he is coming off his worst effort of the year, rushing for 93 yards on 21 carries last weekend. Another weapon in the Knights' backfield is fullback Brian Leonard who has rushed for 164 yards and two scores, in addition to leading the team with 21 catches.

Defensively the Knights have been simply outstanding this season, and they are limiting their opponents to a minuscule 8.3 ppg and only 221.3 total ypg. The team has fared well against both the run (80.3 ypg) and pass (141.0 ypg), and has also forced 17 turnovers this year. Last weekend Rutgers gave up just 161 yards of total offense, including only 113 yards on the ground to the top rushing attack in the nation in Navy. The defense yielded a mere nine first downs in the win, while posting seven sacks. Ramel Meekins turned in an effort worth noting as he finished with 12 stops, three forced fumbles and a pair of sacks. On the year, Courtney Greene heads the club with not only 34 stops, but with three interceptions as well.

The Panthers have quietly become one of the top offenses in the Big East this season and they enter the game averaging a healthy 37.6 ppg behind 409.3 total ypg. The offense has had success both on the ground (157.9 ypg) and through the air (251.4 ypg) and has committed just 10 turnovers in seven games. Last week Pittsburgh's offense clicked on all cylinders, racking up 261 yards on the ground and 206 through the air in an easy win over UCF. LaRod Stephens-Howling led the way as he rushed for 135 yards and three scores on 19 carries. It was clearly one of the better efforts of the season by Stephens-Howling, who leads the club with 563 rushing yards and six touchdowns in six outings. While he is certainly a big part of the offense, there is no bigger piece than quarterback Tyler Palko. The gritty gunslinger is in the midst of a terrific season, as he has completed an efficient 70.8 percent of his throws for 1,661 yards with 17 touchdowns, against only three interceptions. Last week Palko hit on 11-of-15 pass attempts for 172 yards and a pair of scores. Palko has built a solid connection with wideout Derek Kinder, who leads the program with 27 catches, 526 receiving yards and six scores.

On the defensive side of the ball the Panthers have been nothing short of solid this year, allowing only 13.3 ppg and 288.4 total ypg. The unit has done a good job against the run (114.4 ypg) and has also had success forcing turnovers with 20 to its credit. Last week Pittsburgh generated four turnovers, in addition to holding UCF to just 320 yards of total offense. The defense also recorded four sacks, giving it a total of 18 for the year. H.B. Blades, once again, led the charge for the Panthers with 10 stops, a sack and a forced and recovered fumble. His 78 stops not only leads Pittsburgh and the Big East but also places him sixth in the nation as well.

This should be a classic, as both teams appear to be evenly matched all around. Rutgers has the better ground game, but Pittsburgh can counter that with its passing attack. The game should go down to the wire, with Palko making the biggest difference for the Panthers.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Pittsburgh 31, Rutgers 28
