Irish back at work against Bruins

(Sports Network) - The UCLA Bruins hit the road this week, as they invade South Bend for a showdown with 10th-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday. Karl Dorrell's Bruins won four of their first five games, but enter this contest following a 30-20 loss at nationally-ranked Oregon last week. The setback leaves UCLA at 2-2 in Pac-10 play. Charlie Weis' Irish were idle a week ago and last played on October 7th, a 31-10 rout of Stanford. The victory was the third straight for Notre Dame and the fifth in the first six games of the season. This marks just the third all-time meeting between these two programs. Notre Dame has won both prior meetings, but they took place way back in 1963 and 1964. The Irish have fared very well against members of the Pac-10 over the years, with a 75-39-6 record against the conference all-time.

UCLA's offensive numbers don't jump off the page, but the team has shown decent production in 2006. The Bruins are averaging a steady 25.7 ppg, but getting those points on just 333.5 yards of total offense. This is a unit that likes to run the football, averaging 4.0 yards per carry and 143.7 yards per game. Junior tailback Chris Markey has handled the majority of the workload in the backfield and is averaging nearly 100 yards per game (98.2 ypg). Despite the solid production, it has resulted in just one TD, with the team as a whole generating just five TDs on the ground. Quarterback Ben Olson suffered a knee injury against Arizona (October 7th), making way for sophomore Pat Cowan, who made his first career start against the Ducks last week. Cowan completed just 16-of-31 passes, for 112 yards in the loss and much do a better job under center this week, if the Bruins want to keep things close. There is no clear go-to-guy in the vertical game, as seven different players have double-digit receptions. Junior Brandon Breazell (17 receptions, for 211 yards and one TD) is probably the best of the bunch.

The UCLA defense is why the team is two games over .500 at this time. The team is limiting foes to a mere 15.3 ppg in 2006, while effectively stopping the run (84.3 ypg) and the pass (167.7 ypg). The unit has amassed 16 takeaways (eight INTs and eight fumble recoveries), while recording 18 sacks thus far. Senior end Justin Hickman (6-2, 263) is the player offensive lines must account for up front. Hickman (19 tackles), leads the team in both TFLs (11) and sacks (7.5). Fellow end Bruce Davis (22 tackles, 8.0 TFLs, 4.5 sacks) provides adequate pressure from the other side as well. Strong safety Chris Horton (team-high 35 tackles, two INTs) has been very active in the secondary, as has freshman corner Alterraun Verner (25 tackles, two INTs).

Notre Dame will take it right to the UCLA defense, led by the play of All- American Brady Quinn. The veteran signal-caller is not putting up the eye- popping numbers he did a year ago, but hasn't exactly been bad. Quinn has completed 63.5 percent of his passes in 2006, going for 1,634 yards with 16 TDs and just four INTs. Tailback Darius Walker may just be the MVP of the team in the first half of the season. Not only is Walker leading the way on the ground (87.7 ypg), but he is also the team's top receiver thus far (38 receptions, for 258 yards and one TD). However, Quinn likes to go downfield often and that is where veteran wideouts Rhema McKnight and Jeff Samardzija come in. Knight has returned from an injury that cost him most of the 2005 season, and has thrived in the vertical game, hauling in 37 balls for a team-high 495 yards and seven TDs (also a team-high). Samardzija has been his usual productive self, grabbing 34 balls, for 369 yards and five scores. Tight end John Carlson (28 receptions, for 397 yards and two scores) is the next in a long line of productive TEs for the Irish.

Defensively, the Irish have looked great at times, but porous on other occasions. Consistency has been difficult for this unit, with the team allowing 23.7 ppg, on 347.7 yards of total offense per outing. All-American Tom Zbikowski missed the Stanford game last time out and his presence is definitely needed in the seven. He is listed as the starter this weekend at strong safety and his return can only help this defense. Zbikowski currently ranks third on the team in tackles (34) and is usually responsible for big plays game-in and game-out. The secondary has received great effort from a slimmed down Chinedum Ndukwe (43 tackles, one sack, two INTs), who has made plays all over the field. Linebacker Maurice Crum shares the lead in tackles with Ndukwe, but the crown jewel of the defense resides up front in the form of senior end Victor Abiamiri (22 tackles, 9.0 TFLs, 5.0 sacks).

The Irish have very few challenges in the second half of the season with this game against the Bruins and the season-finale at USC sandwiched around games against three service academies and North Carolina. Getting this game at home will only widen the gap between these two teams, with Notre Dame winning this one comfortably.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Notre Dame 37, UCLA 20
