The Badgers feature one of the most balanced and potent offensive attacks in the Big Ten, as they are averaging 189.9 ypg on the ground and 202.1 ypg through the air. The offense, which is producing 33.9 ypg, has also done well to protect the ball, with just 12 turnovers in seven games. Last weekend, Wisconsin posted 208 rushing yards and 193 passing in an easy victory over Minnesota. P.J. Hill had a big day for the Badgers, as he rushed for 164 yards and a pair of scores on 25 totes. It was yet another strong effort by Hill, who ranks second in the nation with 1,011 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Quarterback John Stocco put forth a solid effort last weekend, throwing for 193 yards and four touchdowns on 12-of-19 pass attempts. Stocco has done a nice job managing the offense this season and has completed 62.3 percent of his throws for 1,389 yards with 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions. His main target is Travis Beckum, who leads the team with 28 catches, 433 receiving yards and three scores. Last weekend Beckum went for 118 yards and two scores on five catches.
Defensively, Wisconsin has more than held its own this season and that is evident in the mere 12.7 ppg and 240.0 total ypg it is currently allowing. The team has really thrived against opposing air attacks, giving up just 123.1 passing ypg and only two touchdowns against eight interceptions. Last weekend the Badgers' defense was at their best, holding Minnesota to only 200 yards of total offense, including 94 through the air. The unit also forced a pair of turnovers, in addition to recording three sacks in the win. Jonathan Casillas led the way for Wisconsin with eight stops, while Mark Zalewski added six stops of his own. On the year the two are tied for the team-lead in tackles with 49, although Casillas also has a club-high eight TFLs to his name.
The Boilermakers have had little trouble moving the ball this season, as they come into the game averaging a healthy 471.7 total ypg. The team has shown it can run the ball (144.6 ypg), but has thrived with its passing game (327.1 ypg). Last weekend Purdue rolled up 510 yards of total offense, including 448 via the pass, in an easy win over Northwestern. Quarterback Curtis Painter led the way, throwing for 431 yards and a pair scores on 35-of-49 pass attempts. On the year Painter has completed 60.2 percent of his throws for an impressive 2,218 yards with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has also rushed for four more touchdowns. Painter has benefited from a solid trio of receivers in Dorien Bryant, Dustin Keller and Greg Orton. All three players have caught at least 30 passes this season and they have combined for 1,454 receiving yards. Last weekend it was Orton's turn to shine, as he pulled in 13 balls for 144 yards. As for the ground game, it is paced by the duo of Kory Sheets and Jaycen Taylor. Sheet leads the team with 462 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, while Taylor checks in with 370 yards behind an eye-poping 7.0 ypc average.
On the defensive side of the ball is where Purdue has had its share of problems this season, allowing 29.6 ppg and 412.4 total ypg. The unit hasn't had much success against either the run (156.6 ypg) or pass (255.9 ypg) and has forced just 12 turnovers thus far. The Boilermakers, however, are coming off one of their better defensive efforts of the season, as they held Northwestern to just 251 total yards last weekend. The defense gave up only 83 of those yards through the air, while recording five sacks. George Hall headed the charge with 11 stops, while Anthony Spencer added nine stops and a sack. Spencer has been one of the top performers in the nation this season and he leads the Boilermakers with 59 stops, 17 TFLs, 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.
This will be a big test for the Badgers, as the Boilermakers are more than capable of pulling the upset with their high-powered offense and home field advantage. Wisconsin, however, has the much better defense of the two teams and that will make all the difference in the end.
