Bailey's field goal leads Texas over Nebraska

Lincoln, NE (Sports Network) - Backup kicker Ryan Bailey kicked a 22-yard field goal with 23 seconds left to lead the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns to a 22-20 victory over the 17th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in a Big 12 showdown.

Bailey replaced starting place kicker Greg Johnson for the game-winning field goal as Johnson missed two attempts and had an extra point blocked earlier in the contest.

"He kicks well from right to left. He has not missed a kick in practice," Texas head coach Mack Brown said. "We have really been impressed by him, and again, we were going to kick him in the Baylor game last week, but Greg just felt good. We've only kicked two field goals all year, but Ryan has been a guy that hasn't missed in practice, and we thought he would make it in a game."

Colt McCoy completed 25-of-39 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns for the Longhorns, who have won six straight.

Limas Sweed hauled in eight passes for 119 yards and a touchdown for Texas (7-1, 4-0 Big 12) while Selvin Young ran for 50 yards and Jamaal Charles rushed for 63.

Zac Taylor threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns with an interception for the Cornhuskers, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Terrence Nunn hauled in five passes for 84 yards for Nebraska (6-2, 3-1) but had a key fumble late in the game that led to Texas winning the contest.

Trailing 19-14, Nebraska took the lead on a halfback pass with just under five minutes left in the game. Marlon Lucky took the pitch in the backfield from Taylor and found Nate Swift wide open in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown pass to jump ahead 20-19.

"It was a great call," Taylor said. We had ran the sweep a few times already and their secondary was over pursuing. It is probably the best throw Marlon has ever had. I thought for a second that he was going throw it up into the stands, but it obviously ended up okay."

Before the trick play, Taylor hit Maurice Purify for a 21-yard pass to give Nebraska a first down at Texas' 25-yard line.

On its next drive, Texas was unable to move the football and went three-and- out leaving 2:58 on the fourth-quarter clock.

Nebraska gave the Longhorns life though after Nunn fumbled and Marcus Griffin recovered for Texas at the Cornhuskers' 44 with 2:17 remaining.

McCoy then moved Texas all the way down to the Nebraska five-yard line setting up Bailey's 22-yard field goal to put the Longhorns on top at 22-20 with just 23 ticks on the clock.

The kick was Bailey's first collegiate field goal.

A deep pass attempt with no time on the clock came up empty for Nebraska, but a roughing the passer penalty on the play gave the Cornhuskers another a chance. Taylor's pass attempt though was knocked down in the end zone.

The Longhorns stormed out of the gates as Greg Smith took the opening kickoff and ran it 85 yards to the Nebraska nine-yard line. The Cornhuskers defense though was able to keep Texas out of the end zone as the Longhorns settled for a 22-yard field goal by Johnson to take an early 3-0 lead.

On its second offensive possession of the game, Nebraska took a 7-3 lead after Taylor connected with Purify for a 63-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass with just under six minutes to play in the opening quarter.

With both teams battling for field position, Texas caught a break after a short punt put them on Nebraska's 39. Texas turned the solid field position into points as Quan Cosby capped a six-play, 39-yard drive with a six-yard TD reception to go up 9-7 after the extra point was blocked with 6:43 remaining in the first half.

On the ensuing possession, a pressured Taylor was intercepted by Michael Griffin and Texas turned the turnover into points immediately.

On the first play from scrimmage after the interception, McCoy threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Sweed as Texas' lead grew to 16-7 with 4:00 remaining until halftime.

The Longhorns had an opportunity late in the first half to add three points, but Johnson's 39-yard field goal attempt fell short.

Johnson missed another field goal attempt, a 31-yarder, with 2:31 left in third quarter as Texas failed to add to its lead.

The Cornhuskers closed the gap to 16-14 early in the fourth quarter after Brandon Jackson caught a 49-yard TD pass.

Texas responded on the following possession and put together a 15-play, 77- yard drive that was capped by a Johnson 22-yard field goal that made it 19-14 with 6:33 left in the contest. The scoring drive ate up over eight minutes of clock.

Game Notes
