Johnson had scores of eight, 18, four and 12 yards on 27 carries while Jared Zabransky threw for 145 yards on 10-of-22 passing with two touchdowns and one interception for the Broncos (8-0, 4-0 WAC), whose eight straight wins are tied with Michigan for the third longest streak in the country.
Steven Wichman completed 24-of-45 passes for 328 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions and Marlon Haynes had six receptions for 96 yards and a score for the Vandals (4-4, 3-1 WAC), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Luke Smith-Anderson hauled in five passes for 68 yards and a touchdown in defeat.
With the game tied 14-14, Boise State went up by seven when Zabransky hit Derek Schouman for a three-yard TD pass. The drive, which began on their own 29-yard line, ate up just under four minutes of clock and was kept alive by Jerard Rabb's 39-yard reception to give the Broncos a first down at Idaho's 16.
Boise State started the third quarter off on the wrong foot, as Zabransky's pass was intercepted by Stanley Franks, who brought it down to the Broncos' 24- yard line. The Vandals failed to reach the end zone, but Tino Amancio split the uprights with a 29-yard boot to cut within four.
Johnson's 18-yard touchdown dash on the ensuing drive capped a seven-play, 78- yard march to give Boise State a 28-17 advantage with 7:20 remaining in the third.
Idaho made it an eight-point game on Amancio's 25-yard chip shot late in the third. The field goal was set up after Ben Alexander blocked Kyle Stringer's punt and took it to the Broncos 11.
Haynes' 41-yard touchdown catch cut the Vandals' deficit to two after Wichman's pass was incomplete on the two-point conversion attempt, but Boise State answered back on their next possession, taking a 35-26 lead when Johnson rushed four yards into the end zone with just over five minutes to play.
The Broncos put a stamp on the game with Johnson's fourth rushing touchdown, a 12-yard run that capped a four-play, 44-yard drive with 1:33 left in the game.
Wichman's four-yard touchdown pass to Wendell Octave capped a nine-play, 86- yard drive to give Idaho a 7-0 lead with 10:11 left in the first quarter. The big play of the possession came on 2nd-and-8 when Brian Flowers hauled in a 47-yard catch.
After a three-and-out by Boise State, Wichman hooked up with Raymond Fry for a 40-yard gain, but four plays later, Idaho failed to post any points when Amancio missed a 41-yard field goal wide left.
Boise State tied the game, though, on their next possession. Zabransky connected with Legedu Naanee, who made a leaping catch down the middle and scampered into the end zone for a 61-yard touchdown with 5 1/2 minutes to play in the opening frame.
Wichman's 18-yard touchdown toss to Smith-Anderson put the Vandals up 14-7 with just over a minute to play in the first. The 11-play, 80-yard march was highlighted by Haynes' first-down catch of 18 yards on 3rd-and-8. The Broncos committed a 15-yard penalty that advanced Idaho inside the 20- yard line.
The Broncos evened the contest once again, this time on an Johnson eight-yard rushing touchdown with 10 1/2 minutes left in the half.
Game Notes
Octave finished with four catches for 33 yards...The Broncos converted just 4- of-12 third downs...Idaho's Jayson Bird rushed 11 times for 50 yards...Boise State has won the last nine games against Idaho, including last year's 70-35 thrashing.
