Lynch got his 15th career game with 100-plus rushing yards, tying Russell White (1990-92) and Chuck Muncie (1973-75) for the school record.
"It was such a gutsy performance by Marshawn [Lynch] today," California coach Jeff Tedford said. "He put the offense on his back and to make so many plays like he did today is just a phenomenal performance."
In overtime, Nate Longshore completed a three-yard pass to Robert Jordan and then got a 22-yard touchdown rush by Lynch for the final margin, as Desmond Bishop intercepted a Carl Bonnell pass on the ensuing possession to preserve the victory.
"We played a good football team today and I think you could say that we played them toe-to-toe," Washington coach Tyrone Willingham said. "We just didn't win."
Longshore completed 21-of-36 passes for 291 yards for the Golden Bears (7-1, 5-0 Pac-10), who won their seventh straight. Justin Forsett rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Lavelle Hawkins caught six passes for 99 yards.
Bonnell completed 17-for-31 passes for 284 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions in his third career start for the Huskies (4-4, 2-3), who lost their third straight. Louis Rankin rushed for 88 yards on 22 attempts, and Anthony Russo caught three balls for 91 yards and a score. Sonny Shackelford added 63 receiving yards on a pair of catches.
Trailing 17-16, the Bears milked nearly five minutes from the fourth-quarter clock and Lynch broke free for a 17-yard touchdown run down the right side, capping a 12-play, 82-yard drive with 1:52 to play. Forsett rushed in the two- point conversion for a 24-17 Cal lead.
The Huskies had a final opportunity. After completing a five-yard pass to Corey Williams for a first down, Bonnell threw a nine-yard pass to Williams and Bonnell rushed for 12 yards on two carries before Rankin scampered six yards for a first down and an opportunity for one final shot at the end zone.
Bonnell launched a hail mary pass toward the end zone and, after three Cal defensive backs had their hands on the ball, it was tipped right to Marlon Wood just in front of the goal line and the wide receiver had the wherewithal to dip back and dive into the end zone as regulation expired.
Washington's Michael Braunstein kicked a 33-yard field goal with 9:42 left in the first, capping an eight-play, 44-yard drive for the only points scored in the quarter.
Neither team produced any point throughout the second until the final minute. Russo scored on a 50-yard pass from Bonnell with 47 seconds on the clock to cap a three-play, 68-yard drive executed in just under a minute.
Just as it looked like Washington might secure a first-half shutout, Longshore completed three straight passes of 26 yards, three yards and 25 yards to set up Tom Schneider, who converted a 21-yard field goal with two ticks left on the clock and a 10-3 deficit.
Cal tied the score, 10-10, with 10:31 left in the third. In three minutes, the Bears drove the ball 61 yards on five plays before Forsett punched it in from the one.
After completing a 46-yard pass to Shackelford straight up the middle, Bonnell gave the ball away as Robert Peele intercepted a pass and returned it 13 yards to the Cal 22. The Bears marched 46 yards on eight plays capped by a career- long 50-yarder by Schneider for a 13-10 Cal lead with 4:41 to go in the third.
Bonnell then got the Huskies down to the end zone on a five-play, 86-yard drive capped by a seven-yard touchdown scamper for a 17-13 lead over the Bears less than a minute into the fourth.
Washington held the Bears to three points when Schneider kicked a 29- yarder with 10:21 left in the fourth for a one-point Huskies lead.
Game Notes
These are the only two teams that have taken part in every season since the Pac-10's inception in 1916. The Huskies hold a 46-37-4 advantage in the all- time series, but it is California which has won five straight in the series, including a 56-17 rout in last year's matchup.
