Washington State upsets 16th-ranked Oregon
Pullman, WA (Sports Network) - Dwight Tardy rushed for 145 yards on 20 carries to lead an underrated Washington State club over the 16th-ranked Oregon Ducks, 34-23 in Pac-10 action."They didn't realize we were coming so hard and we hit them in the mouth and they just folded," Tardy said. "We started rolling and in the second half, the big runs came."
Alex Brink completed 20-of-23 passes for 177 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Cougars (5-3, 3-2 Pac-10), who have won two of three. Michael Bumpus caught eight passes for 74 yards and Jed Collins had three receptions for 57 yards and a score.
Brady Leaf completed 16-of-27 passes for 262 yards - all career highs - and a pair of touchdowns for the Ducks (5-2,3-2 Pacific-10), who have lost two of three. Dennis Dixon completed 12-of-20 passes for 105 yards and Jeremiah Johnson rushed for 63 yards on 12 carries. Jaison Williams had 163 receiving yards on nine catches, while Jordan Kent had a career-best pair of receiving touchdowns with 50 yards on four catches.
Dixon was pulled in the second half to try to give the Ducks a spark.
"I felt that he (Dixon) wasn't quite comfortable in the pocket, that maybe he felt some of the pressure," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said. "But overall, I can't put the turnovers on him early, but we just have to have a spark and make sure we get the ball moving downfield."
Trailing 27-3, the Ducks put up 20 points in the fourth but failed to rally enough for the win. Oregon finally got going courtesy of the defense. Brink got sacked by Darius Sanders, who forced the QB to cough up the ball. Sanders then recovered the fumble and ran it six yards for a touchdown with 14:12 on the fourth-quarter clock.
The Ducks completed passes for 21 yards and 27 yards, and Leaf completed a four-yard touchdown pass to Kent for a 27-16 deficit with 7:37 left in the fourth.
However, Washington State put the game away with three ticks under two minutes left when Tardy ran it in from one yard out to cap a five-play, 68-yard drive.
Oregon scored on its final drive. After a pair of 11-yard plays, Leaf found Kent for a 36-yard touchdown pass and the final margin.
After a scoreless first quarter, Washington State scored on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Brink to Collins with 11:13 left in the second, but the PAT was blocked.
Oregon marched 62 yards on 15 plays and the drive was capped by a Paul Martinez 35-yard field goal with 4:49 remaining.
But, Jason Hill gave Washington State a 13-3 halftime lead on a 16-yard touchdown reception with just over 30 seconds left in the quarter.
Washington State kept control through the third quarter. Collins capped a nine-play, 81-yard drive on a one-yard touchdown scamper with 9:37 to go in the third. Ty Brackenridge then intercepted Dixon's first pass on Oregon's ensuing drive and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown just 26 seconds later.
Game Notes
The loss is Oregon's first in Pullman since 2002, and its 16 points are the fewest scored in Pullman since a 21-7 loss in 1994...Oregon holds a narrow 39-38-7 edge in the all-time series with Washington State, and had a two- game winning streak against the Cougars snapped.
