Foster finished the game with 34 yards on 11 carries and Erik Ainge went 28- for-46 with 302 yards but three interceptions for the Volunteers (6-1, 2-1 SEC), who have won their last four games.
"It feels good to win," said Ainge. "Anytime you can win the Tennessee-Alabama game, however you get it done, winning is what's important. We know that it wasn't the prettiest game. We had our moments, and we are going to learn a lot from the film. The bottom line is that we won."
John Parker Wilson went 13-for-29 with 158 yards and D.J. Hall had seven receptions for 102 yards for the Crimson Tide (5-3, 2-3), who had a two-game winning streak snapped.
"It was a heartbreaking loss for our team," said Alabama coach Mike Shula. "We felt like we had done what it was going to take to win the game. We played three-and-a-half quarters of pretty good football."
The Volunteers were trailing 13-6 heading into the final 15 minutes, but cut their deficit to four points when James Wilhoit nailed a 27-yard field goal to make it 13-9 with a little over eight minutes to play.
Tennessee forced Alabama to punt on its ensuing possession and put together a game-winning drive.
The Volunteers started with the ball on their own 30 and, after a first down thanks to an Alabama penalty, Ainge found Robert Meachem at the right sideline for 27 yards. On 3rd-and-1, Ainge found Foster over the middle for 15 yards to get the ball to the seven-yard line. Three plays later, Foster punched the ball in from a yard out for a 16-13 lead with 3:28 to play.
The Tennessee defense forced Alabama to a three-and-out on its next possession and, after Tennessee had to punt the ball with 1:29 to play, kept Alabama from getting into scoring position to complete the victory by sacking Wilson to end the game.
"I'm obviously very pleased to get the win," said Volunteers coach Phillip Fulmer. "We worked like heck over the off week on our return game, and the guys responded. It's certainly a team game, and when one side of the ball is struggling - as our offense was at times tonight - it's great to have the other side of the ball or the special teams step up."
After both sides exchanged a pair of punts, Alabama got on the board to take the lead. A 10-play, 59-yard drive stalled at the Tennessee seven-yard line and a 24-yard field goal by Jamie Christensen made it a 3-0 game with 2:38 left in the first. The key play of the drive was when Jimmy Johns, on a 2nd- and-2 at the Tennessee 46, scampered for a 27-yard run.
The Vols tied the game on their first possession of the second quarter. A 10- play, 59-yard drive was capped off by a Wilhoit 27-yard field goal to make it a 3-3 game with just 6:26 left in the first half. Ainge hit Bret Smith with a 39-yard reception on 3rd-and-9 to get the ball into Crimson Tide territory.
After stopping Alabama on the ensuing drive, Tennessee had a chance to take the lead heading into the locker room, but Simeon Castle picked off Ainge and returned the ball 60 yards to the Tennessee eight-yard line.
The Volunteers defense, though, held the Crimson Tide and an 18-yard field goal by Christensen gave Alabama a 6-3 lead heading into the locker room.
The teams exchanged punts to start the second half, but a 39-yard punt return by Jonathan Hefney helped to set up a 47-yard field goal by Wilhoit to tie the game for the Volunteers a little over six minutes into the second half.
The Volunteers stopped the Crimson Tide on their ensuing possession and got the ball into Alabama territory, but had to turn the ball over when Ainge was stuffed for no gain on a 4th-and-1.
Six plays later, Tim Castille punched the ball into the end zone from two yards out to give Alabama a 13-6 lead with less than a minute to play in the third. The big play of the drive was when Wilson hooked up with Hall for 41 yards.
