Oklahoma rolled to a 34-9 triumph over Iowa State last weekend, but sensational tailback Adrian Peterson broke his collarbone on a late touchdown run and will likely miss the rest of the season.
Allen Patrick rushed for 110 yards on a career-high 35 carries with a touchdown in Peterson's place for the Sooners (5-2, 2-1 Big 12), who have won three of four. Malcolm Kelly caught seven passes for 64 yards.
"I was really pleased how they (the defense) played the entire night," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "Very solid in our positioning, adjusting, being physical in tackling and containing the quarterback as well. I was extremely pleased in the way we played. Offensively, I thought we really managed the game well. The conditions weren't the best. I believe that resulted in a lot of the drops, but I am extremely pleased in how we managed the game."
Bernard Jackson completed a dismal 3-of-14 passes for 39 yards with an interception for the Buffaloes (1-7, 1-3), who have lost seven of their eight games this season and their last 13 against ranked opponents. Jackson rushed for a team-high 54 yards on 10 carries.
"Our defense played great," Colorado coach Dan Hawkins said. "They played with a lot of heart and made some plays. They got us the ball a couple times, we just couldn't capitalize offensively. Obviously, we got dominated on offense."
Oklahoma notched a quick 10-point lead in the first quarter. Manuel Johnson caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Thompson with one foot inside the left edge of the end zone, capping a 12-play, 61-yard drive, with 7:49 left in the first for a 7-0 Sooners lead. Matt DiLallo's 22-yard punt into the wind then helped set up Garret Hartley, who converted a 46-yard field goal with four seconds on the clock to cap a six-play, 17-yard drive.
After scoreless second and third quarters, Oklahoma capped a 12-play, 54-yard drive on a Patrick two-yard touchdown scamper with 10:26 to go in the fourth.
Mason Crosby converted a 39-yard field goal with 6:13 remaining for the only Colorado offense of the day to avoid being shut out for the first time since a 7-0 loss to Nebraska on November 12, 1988.
The Sooners sealed the victory on a four-yard touchdown run by Chris Brown with 17 seconds on the clock.
Oklahoma had 271 yards of total offense compared to a season-low 113 by Colorado.
Game Notes
The Buffaloes mustered just two first downs on their first nine possessions...Oklahoma owns a commanding 39-16-2 advantage in the all-time series with Colorado, including a 42-3 romp over the Buffaloes in 2004.
