The Wolverines (8-0) are coming off a 20-6 victory over Iowa on Saturday and are on a collision course to possibly remain unbeaten before facing the Buckeyes (8-0) in the final game of the regular season. Michigan hosts Northwestern and Ball State in its next two games before playing at Indiana on November 11 and taking on Ohio State at Columbus November 18.
The Buckeyes, who beat Indiana, 44-3, on Saturday, have a home game against Minnesota this week before games at Illinois and Northwestern, leading up to the Michigan contest.
This marks the first time since October 27, 2001 that the same conference has held the top two spots in the standings. Prior to this, Nebraska was No. 1 and Oklahoma No. 2.
Southern California (6-0), which was idle this past weekend, had been No. 2 in the standings. The Trojans play at Oregon State this Saturday. USC had been ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the BCS standings for 25 straight weeks.
Ohio State has a BCS average of .9764, while Michigan is at .9451, and USC is at .9430.
West Virginia (7-0) is fourth in the BCS, followed by Auburn (7-1), Florida (6-1), Texas (7-1), Louisville (7-0), Notre Dame (6-1) and California (7-1).
The top two teams in the final BCS standings, which will be released on December 3, will play in the BCS Championship Game on January 8 in Glendale, Arizona.
The BCS title game is new to the series this year, as the other top bowl games -- Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta -- will still play their traditional games on New Year's Day or soon after. The BCS title game will rotate among the four traditional sites -- Pasadena, Miami, New Orleans and Arizona -- giving each of the venues two games in one particular season.
The champions from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac-10 and SEC make up six of the 10 teams in the five BCS games. The other four spots go to at-large teams that have at least nine wins and are ranked among the top 14 in the final BCS standings.
One team from among the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference or the Western Athletic Conference automatically qualify for a BCS game if either: such team is ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS standings, or, such team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS standings and its ranking in the final BCS standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.
Notre Dame will automatically qualify for the BCS if it is in the top eight of the final BCS standings.
The BCS system uses a pair of human polls -- the Harris Interactive and the USA Today -- as well as six computer rankings. Each poll counts one-third toward the overall score, while the average of the computers completes the formula.
