The Northwestern offense certainly isn't to blame for last week's historic loss to Michigan State, as the Wildcats put up a season-high 38 points and seemingly had control of the contest. Quarterback C.J. Bacher threw for 245 yards and three TDs, while RB Tyrell Sutton became the eighth player in school history to surpass the 2,000-yard mark with his impressive 172-yard effort, as he averaged better than eight yards per carry, the team netting 5.1 ypc on the day. Both Shaun Herbert and Ross Lane finished with a pair of scoring catches. Sutton is the most potent performer on the NU offense once again this season, as the sensational sophomore is averaging 6.1 ypc and his four TDs (three rushing, one receiving) give him 22 in his career. As for Bacher, he made his first career start against MSU, and despite the team's late collapse, earned the right to be back under center once again.
Michigan State scored 38 points over the final 37 minutes and change last week, turning what had been an impressive performance by the Northwestern defense in the first three quarters into one of the most miserable outcomes ever. The Spartans wound up with 436 total yards, 340 of which came through the air, and scored on all six trips to the red zone. The game was also painful for the Wildcats on another front as senior LB Nick Roach (the team's leading tackler) was likely lost for the season with a broken leg suffered in the third quarter. With Roach on the sidelines, Adam Kadela with his 52 total stops takes over the leadership role for a defense that is giving up 27.5 points and 383 yards per contest. Defending the pass has been NU's Achilles' heel this season, as foes have thrashed the 'Cats to the tune of 241.0 ypg.
Led by the Big Ten's second-leading rusher in junior Mike Hart, the Michigan offense continues to power its way past the opposition, averaging nearly 30 points and 362 total yards per game. Hart is churning out 129 ypg (seventh nationally) and he has scored eight TDs. He has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the second time in his career and has seven 100-yard games this season. As for QB Chad Henne, he is more steady than spectacular and is completing 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,502 yards with 14 TDs against only five INTs. The team's top pass-catching option, particularly with the loss of standout Mario Manningham (24 receptions, 527 yards, nine TDs) to injury, is Steve Breaston (35 receptions, 350 yards). Ball control is one of the keys to UM's success, as the Wolverines lead the nation in time of possession (34:10 minutes per game). Hart rushed for 126 yards and two TDs in last week's win over Iowa, while Henne threw for 203 yards and Adrian Arrington and Breaston combined for 15 grabs and 128 yards.
The Michigan defense is one of the best in the country, yielding a mere 240.8 total ypg (tops in the Big Ten). The unit's strength lies in its ability to shut down the opposition's ground attack, allowing just 33.6 rushing ypg -- the lowest yield in the nation. As a result, the Wolverines are giving up just 12.6 ppg and foes have found it difficult to get into any kind of rhythm offensively against coach Carr's troops. LaMarr Woodley has been a terror from his linebacker position, ranking fourth nationally in sacks with nine, the team as a whole sitting atop the Big Ten with 30 sacks. The Wolverines have been highly effective on third down, holding the enemy to just a 27 percent success rate. David Harris is the team's top tackler with 47, 35 of which have been solo efforts. Iowa managed just 41 rushing yards last week, marking the sixth time this season that a Michigan opponent had rushed for fewer than 50 yards. Jamar Adams led the UM stand with six tackles, all unassisted, while Woodley cracked the school's top-10 for career sacks by dragging down Hawkeye QB Drew Tate twice. Shawn Crable tallied a career-best three sacks on the day.
Last week's demoralizing loss aside, the Wildcats aren't nearly good enough to beat the Wolverines on their own field. Northwestern will play tough, but just doesn't have the horses to run with the second-ranked team in the land.
