Hogs get late-season breather

(Sports Network) - The 13th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks are the surprise team of the talent-packed SEC, and they will take a break from league play this weekend to tangle with the UL-Monroe Warhawks. Since beating Alcorn State to open the season, UL-Monroe has suffered six consecutive defeats. The fact that four of the losses have come by five or fewer points suggests that the Warhawks have been much more competitive than their 1-6 record indicates. Last weekend, the club dropped a 35-21 decision to Middle Tennessee, and ULM obviously enters this week's clash as a major underdog. As for Arkansas, it may be the hottest one-loss team in the nation, as it has reeled off six straight victories since dropping an ugly decision to USC in the opener. Last weekend, the Razorbacks were completely dominant on both sides of the ball in a 38-3 thrashing of Ole Miss. Houston Nutt's club is undefeated in SEC play and has the inside track to the SEC championship game, but matchups with South Carolina, Tennessee and LSU will all test the club. Arkansas has won all six previous meetings with UL-Monroe, including a 44-15 victory last season.

Although the UL-Monroe offense did manage three touchdowns against Middle Tennessee last week, only 286 total yards were generated in the loss. The Warhawks held the ball for fewer than 27 minutes and finished 4-of-13 on third down conversion attempts. Kinsmon Lancaster, the starting quarterback for ULM, completed 15-of-27 passes for 184 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Calvin Dawson led the way on the ground with 72 yards and a score on 12 carries. Considering that the Warhawks are only averaging 16.4 ppg and 320.0 total ypg, the offense clearly has room for improvement. Lancaster has started all seven outings, and he has completed 55.7 percent of his passes for 1,054 yards with four touchdowns against eight interceptions. LaGregory Sapp leads the receivers with 25 catches for 343 yards, while Dawson paced the ground attack with 528 yards. Lancaster has scored four rushing touchdowns, and his athleticism adds an extra dimension to his game.

UL-Monroe struggled defensively against Middle Tennessee, surrendering five touchdowns and 449 yards to the Blue Raiders. The Warhawks allowed over 200 yards both rushing and passing, as they looked helpless at times against both modes of attack. Amazingly, Middle Tennessee finished with four turnovers while UL-Monroe did not commit a single giveaway, yet the Warhawks lost the game by double figures. Opponents are scoring 22.6 ppg against UL-Monroe, which is yielding 366.3 total ypg. Of the 20 touchdowns scored by opposing offenses, 12 have come on the ground. With 11 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries, the club has made its fair share of impact plays. On a down note, the total of nine sacks needs to be improved. Kevin Payne leads the ULM defense with 64 total tackles and four interceptions.

Put simply, there isn't a better tailback duo than Arkansas' combination of Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. On the opening kickoff last week, Jones showed his tremendous ability by returning the ball 100 yards for a touchdown. On the next drive by the Razorbacks, McFadden reached the end zone on a four- yard run, and he later scored on a 70-yard pass play. McFadden finished with 150 total yards, and Jones contributed 51 rushing yards on only nine carries. As for freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain, he completed 12-of-15 passes for 157 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. Arkansas is averaging 29.6 ppg and 378.4 total ypg. The Razorbacks are posting 221.7 ypg on the ground on a staggering average of 6.0 ypc, and they are currently the sixth-best rushing team in the nation in regard to yards per game. McFadden has totaled 690 yards and seven touchdowns, while Jones has 520 yards on an average of 9.0 ypc. As for Mustain, he has completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 782 yards with eight touchdowns and only five interceptions. Marcus Monk leads the receivers with 20 catches for 399 yards and three touchdowns.

It is tough to imagine the Arkansas defense playing any better than it did in the victory over Ole Miss last weekend. The Razorbacks surrendered just three points on 245 total yards, proving to be tough against both the run and the pass. The fact that Arkansas was able to limit a fellow SEC team to a single field goal and no touchdowns despite failing to force even one turnover is astonishing. Opponents are scoring 16.0 ppg and posting 292.6 total ypg against the Razorbacks, who have far exceeded expectations on the defensive side of the ball. The pass defense has been tremendous, holding opposing quarterbacks below a 50 percent completion rating. On a down note, Arkansas has only generated four turnovers. Keep an eye on Sam Olajubutu, as he has 25 more tackles than anyone else on the team.

There is no reason to expect this game to be close, as Arkansas is far superior to UL-Monroe in every aspect of the game. Expect McFadden and Jones to run wild against the Warhawks and get a rest later in the contest.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Arkansas 51, UL-Monroe 6
