The fact that Wake Forest is 6-1 despite the fact that it averages fewer than 300 yards of total offense per game is a bit surprising. The Demon Deacons are posting 23.0 ppg and 295.7 ypg, modest figures by any standard. Riley Skinner has completed 67.9 percent of his passes for 912 yards with four touchdowns and one interception, numbers that are efficient but unspectacular. No receiver has more than 13 catches for Wake this season. As for the ground attack, the Deacs rely on a number of players to get the job done. Kevin Harris has posted 313 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5.1 ypg, so he is a player to keep an eye on this weekend. In a 25-23 victory over NC State two weeks ago, Nate Morton hauled in a 57-yard touchdown pass from Skinner just before halftime, and that play proved key to the outcome. Skinner only threw the ball 14 times, completing nine passes for 124 yards. Harris had a first-quarter touchdown and finished with 65 yards on the ground. The key for the offense was that it did not commit a single turnover.
Much of the credit for Wake Forest's success should go to the defense, as the Demon Deacons are limiting opponents to just 14.7 ppg and 303.9 total ypg. Jim Grobe's team is among the top 20 team's nationally in scoring defense, the most important category of all. Stopping the run has been an obvious strength, as foes are managing just 3.0 ypc against Wake with five rushing scores in seven outings. As for the pass defense, it has generated eight interceptions against six touchdowns surrendered. Jon Abbate has 55 tackles to his credit, 10 more than his closest teammate. Bryan Andrews has registered seven TFLs, and three players have two interceptions. Wake allowed 21 first downs and 334 total yards to NC State last time out in addition to 23 points. All three Wolfpack touchdowns came on running plays, and the Deacs have certainly played better defensively.
It is hard to imagine North Carolina playing any worse offensively than it did against Virginia last time out. The Tar Heels failed to score a single point in the clash and finished with 11 first downs and 182 total yards. They were held under 100 yards both passing and rushing and made only one trip to the red zone. Also worthy of mention is the fact that North Carolina turned the ball over three times, the mark of a bad team. Ronnie McGill ran for 71 yards on 16 rushing attempts, the only effort worthy of mention on offense. UNC is averaging 17.5 ppg and 299.3 total ypg, lackluster numbers to say the least. McGill, a senior, does have five touchdowns, four more than any other runner or receiver on the roster. Cam Sexton has taken the majority of the snaps for the Tar Heels, and he has only completed 41 percent of his passes for 738 yards with four scores and eight interceptions. Joe Dailey has been more efficient with 61.3 percent completions, but he has tossed four interceptions with only one touchdown. Both played against Virginia, and that may be the case again this weekend.
North Carolina allowed 370 total yards to Virginia, but it is hard to fault the defense for the loss. After all, the Heels turned the ball over three times as mentioned, putting the defense in tough situations. Still, they failed to record any takeaways, so the offense can't take all the blame. Out of 119 Division I-A teams, North Carolina ranks 113th in scoring defense, surrendering 33.9 ppg. The Tar Heels are 96th in total defense (388.9 ypg) and 114th in rushing defense, yielding 205.86 ypg. The team is last nationally in turnover margin and has done a poor job of pressuring the quarterback. In fact, it is hard to find a single positive to point out about this defense. Don't forget that in the only win for UNC, which came over a Division I-AA foe, the Heels surrendered 42 points.
Wake Forest isn't quite as good as its record indicates, especially when you look at the team's mediocre offense. Still, expect another win for the Demon Deacons this weekend over a North Carolina team that can't stop anyone defensively.
