There is no shortage of offense in Death Valley this season, with Clemson rolling up 454.9 yards per game. The ground game is what fuels the attack, with the team ranking fourth nationally at 260.7 yards per game. The backfield has plenty of talent, but the primary ball carriers are sophomore James Davis and freshman C.J. Spiller. They both are averaging nearly seven yards per carry in 2006 and are responsible for 23 of the team's amazing 27 rushing scores to date. Davis is closing in on 1,000 yards already (961) and has scored 16 touchdowns. Spiller is at 523 yards with seven scores. Quarterback Will Proctor is certainly benefiting from a run-first offense, having completed 61.7 percent of his passes this season, for 1,407 yards and 11 TDs. With veteran wideout Chansi Stuckey on the shelf with an injury, WRs Aaron Kelly (19 catches, 257 yards and two TDs) and Rendrick Taylor (12 receptions, for 152 yards and one TD) will need to step things up downfield. Spiller and Davis also have the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, making them a threat on every offensive play.
Not many teams are providing the type of defensive intensity that Clemson has this season and it is a bit surprising considering that this team has suffered several losses to the core of the unit. Still, the Tigers are limiting foes to a mere 230.4 yards of offense per game (fourth nationally) and 12.5 ppg (seventh nationally). It all starts with the linebacking corps, paced by the play of Nick Watkins (team-high 61 tackles, one sack) and Antonio Clay (52 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks). One of the nation's top pass rushers resides in Death Valley in the form of senior Gaines Adams. A disruptive force upfield, Adams has amassed 30 total tackles, while leading the team in both TFLs (11.5) and sacks (8.5).
Virginia Tech is averaging nearly 30 points per game (29.1), but the offense really lacks explosiveness, netting just 331.0 yards overall per outing. The rushing attack has not lived up to the lofty standards expected in Blacksburg at just 119.1 ypg, while the new-look passing attack has done a little better (211.9 ypg). Quarterback Sean Glennon has completed 58 percent of his passes thus far, for 1,364 yards, with eight TDs and six interceptions. There are several options downfield, but Josh Morgan has found the end zone the most, three times. Branden Ore has handled the majority of the workload in the backfield, averaging a steady 5.7 yard per carry. He has amassed 736 yards (105.1 ypg) and is responsible for nine of the team's 13 rushing scores to date.
Defensively, the Hokies have taken a step back as well. Despite yielding 12.7 ppg in 2006 and 242.7 yards of total offense, there isn't any fear when going up against this unit anymore. Sure, Tech has no problem with opponents that are clearly overmatched, but against quality foes, the unit has struggled at times. Linebacking play has fueled any success on this side of the ball, thanks to Vince Hall (team-high 59 tackles, 5.0 TFLs, two sacks) and Xavier Adibi (49 tackles, 3.0 TFLs, one sack and one INT). Aaron Rouse is a huge safety (6-4, 227) and has played well with 34 tackles and one INT. Known for big plays, the Hokies have done well in that area again in 2006, amassing 21 sacks and 15 takeaways in the first seven games.
The Hokies have had their problems when they are not significantly better than the opposition. They are clearly not in this contest and Clemson is on a tear right now. It all leads to another Tigers' victory, perhaps, a lopsided one.
