It wasn't easy but Texas maintained its dominance over Nebraska since the inception of the Big 12 (6-1) with a thrilling 22-20 win last week in Lincoln. Freshman QB Colt McCoy completed 15-of-28 passes for 277 yards and two TDs to lead the UT offense. McCoy was calm under pressure, and his progress this season has been remarkable. Limas Sweed continued to showcase his tremendous skills as he led all receivers with eight grabs for 119 yards and a score, while Jamaal Charles (the Big 12's fourth-leading rusher with 526 yards) spearheaded the Longhorn ground attack with 63 yards on only nine carries. McCoy is throwing for just 181.1 ypg to rank ninth in the Big 12, but he has thrown the second-most TD passes in the conference (20) and his three INTs are tied for second-fewest. Sweed has 35 receptions for 595 yards and is tied with two others for the most TD catches with nine. Texas is averaging a league-best 40.1 ppg and churning out 388 total ypg. The 'Horns have turned the ball over the fewest times of any team in the Big 12 (10) and own a +12 turnover margin.
Like their offensive counterparts, the Texas defense has dominated the opposition this season to the tune of 14.5 points and 268.2 total yards per contest. The team's effort against the run has been particularly impressive, with foes averaging just 46.5 ypg and scoring only three TDs on the ground. Nebraska accumulated 340 yards last weekend, but turned the ball over three times, converted just 4-of-13 third down tries and failed to reach the red zone all day. Still, the Huskers had the 'Horns on the ropes and it took a late field goal by a walk-on kicker to earn Texas the victory. Scott Derry led the UT stand with nine tackles, seven of which were unassisted efforts, while Michael Griffin and Marcus Griffin finished with eight stops apiece. Aaron Lewis notched three TFLs, the team making nine on the day, four of which were sacks. Through the first eight games, Michael Griffin leads the club with 70 tackles, which is 17 more than his closest teammate (Aaron Ross). Tim Crowder has a remarkable 15 TFLs on the year, and his 8.5 sacks are impressive as well. The team lost DT Derek Lokey for the season with a leg injury suffered against Nebraska.
The Red Raiders continually rank as one of the most feared offensive teams in the country, and this year is no exception. Behind a passing attack that boasts 351.1 ypg and 26 TDs, Texas Tech is averaging nearly 30 ppg. Graham Harrell is this year's talented signal caller, and he is hitting 68.8 percent of his throws with 25 TDs against only seven INTs. Not selective when it comes to spreading the ball around, there are three guys with at least 48 catches to this point, with Joel Filani leading the way with 56 grabs for 689 yards and nine TDs. Shannon Woods and Robert Johnson check in with 49 and 48 receptions, respectively, and the two have combined for 831 yards and seven scores, six of which belong to Johnson. Woods is the team's leading ground gainer with 557 yards and three TDs, and the team as a whole is averaging nearly five yards per carry. In last week's win over Iowa State, Harrell threw for 368 yards and a career-best six TDs, hitting Filani in the end zone three times and Danny Amendola twice. Woods rushed for 93 yards on 15 carries, helping the Red Raiders amass 475 yards of total offense.
Iowa State was held to just 221 total yards last weekend, with the Red Raider defense doing a particularly effective job against the run, yielding a mere 75 yards on just 2.1 yards per carry. The Cyclones didn't fare much better in the air, throwing for only 146 yards with two INTs. Kellen Tillman led the Tech stand with eight tackles, while Darcel McBath checked in with seven. The Red Raiders made seven stops behind the line of scrimmage and were credited with five sacks, two going to Keyunta Dawson. Through eight games, Texas Tech's opponents are averaging 21.4 ppg behind typical offensive production of 145.2 ypg rushing and 147.8 ypg passing. Joe Garcia, McBath and Brock Stratton currently head the team's season tackles list, combining for 159 stops, while Dawson heads the club with five sacks and three fumble recoveries. McBath, Stratton and Chris Parker each have a pair of INTs.
This should be an entertaining game between two teams that can light up the scoreboard in a hurry. Texas has the obvious advantage on defense, but the Red Raiders would love to spoil the Longhorns' party, particularly in front of the hometown faithful.
