Badgers and Illini meet in Madison

(Sports Network) - The 17th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers try to continue their winning ways this Saturday, when they host the Illinois Fighting Illini in Big Ten play from Madison. The Badgers have quietly put together a solid year, as they have posted wins in seven of their first eight games, a feat they have accomplished each of the past three seasons. Last weekend, Wisconsin improved to 4-1 in league play with a 24-3 victory at Purdue. It was the fourth straight win for the Badgers, who now return home to defend their perfect 4-0 mark in Madison this season. With a victory this Saturday, head coach Bret Bielema would set a new Wisconsin record for wins by a first-year head coach. As for Illinois, it hasn't had much success this season, posting just two wins against six losses thus far. The team however, has been rather competitive, and if not for a couple of close losses (by two and three points), it could have been easily fighting for a winning campaign. Still, the Illini enter the contest riding a three-game losing streak, including a 26-12 setback to Penn State last weekend. Illinois does own a 35-32-7 edge in the all-time series with Wisconsin, although the Badgers have won each of the past three meetings, including a 41-24 triumph a year ago.

The Illini have had a decent amount of success moving the ball this season, as they are averaging 189.5 ypg on the ground and 176.6 ypg through the year. The team however, is scoring just 19.2 ppg because of its inability to avoid mistakes, committing a whopping 23 turnovers thus far. Last weekend, Illinois racked up 358 yards of total offense, including 202 on the ground, but committed four costly turnovers in a 26-12 setback to Penn State. Rashard Mendenhall guided the Illini in defeat by rushing for 161 yards on 14 carries. It was one of the better efforts of the season by Mendenhall, who has rushed for 444 yards behind an eye-popping 8.4 ypc average this season. He currently ranks second on the team in rushing behind Pierre Thomas, who has gained 522 yards and three touchdowns on a solid 5.4 ypc average. While the ground game seems to be clicking on all cylinders, the same can't be said about the team's air attack that is led by Isiah Williams. Last weekend, Williams completed just 13-of-33 pass attempts for 156 yards and two interceptions, while being sacked six times. Although Williams has shown good ability to run (311) with the ball this season, he hasn't had much success passing it, completing just 42.4 percent of his throws for 1,081 yards with eight touchdowns against seven interceptions. If Williams can develop into a more accurate passer, this Illini offense could be as good as any in the Big Ten.

Defensively, the Illini has been put in a lot bad spots by its offense and that helps explain why it is allowing 25.6 ppg despite giving up just 298.2 total ypg. The unit has done a decent job against the run (127.8 ypg) and the pass (298.2 ypg), but could use a few more big plays with just 12 forced turnovers thus far. Last weekend, Illinois put forth a tremendous defensive effort, as it limited Penn State's offense to just 10 points and only 184 total yards. The unit permitted just 10 first downs in the loss, while recording a pair of turnovers and sacks. J Leman paced the defense in defeat with seven stops and a sack. He has been by far and away the team's best player on this side of the ball, and he leads the club with 85 stops and nine TFLs.

The Badgers are arguably the most balanced offensive team in the Big Ten, and they have displayed that by rushing for 196.2 ypg and throwing for a nearly identical 202.0 ypg. The unit, which is averaging a solid 32.6 ppg, has also done a good job protecting the ball, turning it over just 13 times in eight games. Last weekend, Wisconsin racked up 442 yards of total offense, including 241 on the ground, in a 24-3 win over Purdue. P.J. Hill, once again, led the charge, as he rushed for 161 yards and two scores on 29 carries. Hill has been simply sensational this season and ranks among the top rushers in the nation with 1,172 yards and 13 touchdowns. Another player that is in the midst of good season is quarterback John Stocco, who has completed 62.3 percent of his throws for 1,590 yards with 12 touchdowns against just three interceptions. Last weekend, Stocco threw for 201 yards and an interception on 13-of-21 tosses. His main target has been Travis Beckum, who heads the club with 32 catches, 501 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Wisconsin's defense has been every bit as good as its offense, and maybe even better, allowing a mere 11.5 ppg and just 245.8 total ypg thus far. The unit has been simply stout against the pass, surrendering just 131.1 ypg and only two touchdowns through the air. The team has even picked off nine passes, in addition to posting 18 sacks. Last weekend, the Badgers limited Purdue's potent offense to just 286 total yards, including only 187 through the air. The defense forced only one turnover in the game, but made up for it by limiting Purdue to just a 3-of-14 effort on third down attempts. Mark Zalewski and Jonathan Casillas each posted eight stops in the win. The duo are currently tied for the team's lead in tackles (57), and have also combined for 11.5 TFLs and three sacks.

Wisconsin is clearly the favorite here, but it must be careful not to overlook a team like Illinois, which did knock off Michigan State on the road earlier this season. Still, the Badgers simply have too much firepower and shouldn't have a difficult time extending their winning streak with another big game from Hill and company.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Wisconsin 38, Illinois 10
