Nebraska not only possesses one of the top offenses in the Big 12, but in the nation as well, averaging 34.9 ppg behind 434.9 total ypg. The unit has displayed a good deal of balance between the run (186.5 ypg) and the pass (248.4 ypg), and has committed just 12 turnovers in eight outings. The Huskers however, committed three turnovers last weekend, including a fumble in the final minutes of the game which setup Texas for a last minute game- winning drive. The miscues overshadowed a decent effort by Nebraska, which racked up 340 yards of total offense against a top-notch Texas defense. Zac Taylor guided the team in defeat, connecting on 15-of-28 pass attempts for 277 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. It was a solid effort by Taylor, who has been extremely dependable this season, throwing for 1,824 yards with 16 touchdowns against a mere three interceptions. Nebraska however, couldn't get its ground attack going last weekend, rushing for just 38 yards against Texas. Marlon Lucky and Brandon Jackson have combined for 883 rushing yards and nine touchdowns this season, but they totaled just 45 yards in a losing effort against Texas. It is no coincidence that in the team's two losses this season, the Huskers' ground attack has been held under 70 yards rushing.
Defensively, Nebraska has done a solid job in holding its opponents to 14.5 ppg, although the 320.2 ypg it is yielding could use some improvement. The defense has fared well against the run (102.0 ypg), but has struggled to slow down opposing air attacks (218.2 ypg). Last weekend, the Huskers were beat for 128 yards on the ground and 220 through the air in a loss to Texas. The defense surrendered 21 first downs in the game, and forced just one turnover. Steve Octavien guided the team with 10 stops and a forced fumble. On the year, Stewart Bradley heads the Huskers with 50 stops, while Andrew Shanle is tops with three interceptions.
Much like Nebraska, OSU, brings one of the top offensive units around into this game, averaging 37.4 ppg and 421.7 total ypg. The Cowboys have shown they can run the ball (203.3 ypg) effectively as well as pass it (218.4 ypg), and they have only turned the ball over 12 times thus far. Last weekend, OSU racked up 226 of its 359 total yards on the ground, but lost the game on a blocked extra-point in overtime. Dantrell Savage put forth a great effort in the loss, as he rushed for 134 yards and a score on 13 totes. Mike Hamilton also got into the mix, rushing 11 times for 50 yards and a touchdown. The duo have accounted for a majority of the team's rushing yards this season, combining for 789 yards and six touchdowns. Quarterback Bobby Reid was knocked out of the game early last weekend with a concussion, but his back up Zac Robinson filled in nicely, throwing for 94 yards and three scores on 7-of-16 tosses. The status of Reid, who has thrown for 17 touchdowns against six interceptions, is unknown at this point, but it is certain Robinson would get the call if Reid is unable go. Whomever is under center will surely be looking in the direction of Adarius Bowman. The talented wideout ranks among the top players in the nation at his position with 791 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. In a losing cause last weekend, Bowman pulled in three balls for 48 yards and a pair of scores.
On the defensive side of the ball is where OSU must improve if it wants to become an elite team in the Big 12, as it is currently allowing 22.3 ppg and 341.6 total ypg. The unit has struggled against both the run (144.6 ypg) and pass (197.0 ypg), and has just 13 forced turnovers to its credit. Last weekend, the Cowboys were torched for 423 total yards, including 231 on the ground, in a loss to Texas A&M. The defense did manage to record two turnovers and three sacks, but also allowed Texas A&M to score a game-tying touchdown in the final seconds of regulation. Andre Sexton guided the defense with 15 stops and a forced fumble. On the year, Sexton leads the club with 48 stops, while Victor DeGrate has provided the team with a legitimate pass rusher, posting 9.5 TFLs and 7.5 sacks thus far.
Points should be plentiful in Stillwater this Saturday, as two of the most explosive teams in the Big 12 go head-to-head. OSU however, has some uncertainty at the quarterback position and that should give the Cornhuskers the advantage they need to pick up a big road win this Saturday.
