Red-hot Scarlet Knights take on Huskies

(Sports Network) - The 16th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights return home for the first time in over month, when they host the Connecticut Huskies in Big East action from New Jersey this Sunday. The Knights enter the game as just one of a few teams left without a loss on the season, as they are perfect 7-0, marking their best start since going 11-0 in 1976. Last weekend, Rutgers concluded a perfect three-game road swing by defeating Pittsburgh 20-10. The win gave the Knights a 2-0 start to league play, a feat it had never before accomplished as a Big East member. The team now returns home for the first time since posting defeating Howard back on September 23rd. Rutgers is 3-0 at home this season, outscoring its opponents 113-14 over that stretch. As for UConn, it was last in action on October 20th when it suffered a 37-11 beating at the hands of nationally-ranked West Virginia. It was the third loss in four outings by the Huskies, who dipped to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action. With regards to the all-time series, Rutgers owns a 17-8 edge over UConn, although the Huskies have won three of the past four encounters.

The Huskies have done most of their damage on the ground this season, as they are averaging a solid 192.9 rushing ypg behind a 4.8 ypc clip. The team however, is throwing for just 143.4 ypg and that helps explain why UConn is averaging only 20.6 ppg. Last weekend, the Huskies were simply shutdown, as they gained a mere 210 yards of total offense in a 37-11 setback to West Virginia. Quarterback Matt Bonislawski had a rough game in the loss, throwing for 58 yards and an interception on 8-of-20 tosses. Bonislawski has struggled to get things going all season long, and he has completed just 44.9 percent of his throws for 574 yards thus far. Running back Terry Caulley has done all that he can to carry the offense, as he has rushed for 623 yards and a pair of scores. He is averaging 5.6 ypc, and is also tied for second on the team with 14 receptions. Caulley, however, was shut down last weekend, as he went for only 35 yards on 13 totes. He also led the team with four catches and 27 receiving yards in the losing effort.

Defensively, the Huskies have had a good amount of success against the pass (143.1 ypg), but that could be because the team is giving up a whopping 189.4 ypg on the ground. Last weekend, UConn's defense was no match for West Virginia, which racked up 419 yards of total offense, including 263 on the ground. The Huskies did manage to force a pair of turnovers, giving them 13 on the year, but that wasn't nearly enough to slow down the Mountaineers. Danny Lansanah posted 12 stops in the loss for the Huskies, and he now heads the club with 60 stops on the year. Another player worth noting is Darius Butler, who leads the team in both interceptions (four) and passes broken up (five).

The Knights have simply run over their opponents this season, and enter the game ranked among the top rushing offenses in the nation, averaging 204.7 ypg. The offense has scored 17 of its 23 touchdowns on the ground and is averaging a healthy 30.0 ppg overall. Last weekend, Rutgers racked up 268 of its 340 total yards on the ground in a win over Pittsburgh. Ray Rice, once again, led the charge, rushing for a career-best 225 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries. Rice has certainly put himself in position to be mentioned in this year's Heisman Trophy race, as he has already rushed for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns. The speedy Rice is averaging a solid 5.6 ypc, and has already set a school record with four career 200-yard rushing games. With Rice doing much of the work for the offense, quarterback Mike Teel hasn't had a chance to showcase his stuff. Teel has thrown for just 893 yards with six touchdowns and seven interceptions this season, but he has come through in several big situations. Last weekend, Teel completed 10-of-18 throws for 72 yards and a touchdown in a winning cause.

On the defensive side of the ball, Rutgers has been nothing short of outstanding this season, allowing only 8.6 ppg and just 223.4 total ypg. The unit has been dominant against the run (78.4 ypg) and good versus the pass (145.0 ypg), and has also posted 18 turnovers and 24 sacks. Last weekend, the Knights shut down one of the most explosive offenses in the Big East, holding Pittsburgh to a dismal 236 yards of total offense, including just 67 on the ground. The unit gave up only 12 first downs, in addition to recording five sacks. Eric Foster and Brandon Renkart each had a pair of sacks in the win, On the year, Foster leads the Knights with 9.0 TFLs and 4.5 sacks, while Courtney Greene ranks first in tackles (38) and interceptions (three).

Rutgers has been one of the best stories in college football this season and it is starting to make believers of all its critics. The Knights simply have too much to offer for UConn to handle, and should win the game with their ground attack and outstanding.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Rutgers 31, Connecticut 10
