Crane, Boston College shut out Buffalo

Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) - Chris Crane ran for two touchdowns and threw for a score, leading 18th-ranked Boston College to a 41-0 rout of Buffalo at Alumni Stadium.

Crane, playing for an injured Matt Ryan, completed 17-of-26 passes for 142 yards with an interception and added 12 rushing yards to BC's total of 207 on the ground. L.V. Whitworth ran for 84 yards and a touchdown, while Andre Callender chipped in 81 rushing yards.

The Eagles (7-1) have won four in a row and will return to ACC action next Saturday at Wake Forest.

"All in all, it's a win and now we can head back to the ACC and get ready to see if we can win some games now," said Boston College head coach Tom O'Brien.

Buffalo (1-7) has lost seven straight since its lone win of the season in its opener against Temple. The Bulls had just 92 total yards, including minus-12 on the ground.

"Their defensive line was tough and we had a very difficult challenge," said Buffalo head coach Turner Gill.

Drew Willy completed 13-of-25 passes for 80 yards with a pair of interceptions in defeat.

Boston College did not punt in the first half. The Eagles scored on their first four possessions before the fifth ended in an interception and time ran out on their last series.

After Buffalo went three and out to start the game, Boston College took a 3-0 lead on a 25-yard field goal by Steve Aponavicius.

The Eagles forced another Buffalo punt and Dejuan Tribble returned it 69 yards to the Bulls' 15-yard line. After converting 4th-and-1 from the six with a two-yard run by linebacker Brian Toal, Crane carried it into the end zone on the next play to increase the lead to 10-0 late in the opening quarter.

Kevin Akins intercepted a Willy pass on Buffalo's next offensive series to set BC up at the Buffalo 35. Eight plays later, Crane scored on an eight-yard run early in the second quarter.

The Eagles went back on offense after another Bulls punt and marched 83 yards for another touchdown. A 33-yard run by Callender keyed the long series and Crane finished it with an eight-yard scoring toss to Mark Palmer for a 24-0 cushion with 5:13 left in the first half.

Willy fumbled on Buffalo's next possession, but Crane gave it right back on the next play when he was picked off by Kendri Hawkins.

A 42-yard return by Jeff Smith on the opening kickoff of the second half gave BC possession at its own 49. Whitworth then broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run on the third play to increase the lead to 31-0.

Buffalo's first offensive series of the third quarter ended with a Willy fumble, but BC could not convert and turned the ball over on downs inside the Buffalo 25.

Willy was then picked off by Jamie Silva on the next Bulls possession and the Eagles kept the ball for the final 6:51 of the third period. Aponavicius booted a 30-yard field goal as time expired to make it 34-0.

A five-yard touchdown run by A.J. Brooks early in the fourth quarter accounted for the final margin.

Buffalo didn't reach Boston College territory until less than three minutes remained in the contest when Johnny Ayers had a punt blocked.

The Bulls started from the BC 26 after the block, but Paul Anderson kept the shutout intact with an interception of a Tony Paoli pass in the end zone.

Game Notes

Ryan sat out with a sore left ankle on a rainy day in the Boston area...BC leads the all-time series 6-2, but this was the first meeting between the teams since 1970.
