Gators continue cocktail dominance over Georgia

Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - Andre Caldwell ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass from Chris Leak, as ninth-ranked Florida opened a big lead and held on for a 21-14 victory over Georgia at Alltel Stadium.

Leak completed 14-of-28 passes for 163 yards with an interception for the Gators (7-1, 5-1 SEC), who have beaten the Bulldogs in eight of the last nine meetings at the Cocktail Party. Florida also controls its destiny in the SEC East Division.

Matthew Stafford and Kregg Lumpkin each ran for a score for Georgia (6-3, 3-3), which has lost three of its last four after opening the season with five straight wins. The Bulldogs could have made things tight in the East Division with a victory.

Florida built a 21-0 lead before Georgia rallied with a pair of touchdowns to make it a seven-point game with just over eight minutes to play. The Bulldogs got the ball back with 4:53 left and went three and out.

Georgia nearly came up with a turnover moments later when Kestahn Moore was stripped during a run, but Billy Latsko fell on the loose ball for the Gators. Florida then caught another break when a third-down run would have come up short, but an incidental facemask penalty gave the Gators a first down and they picked up another with just over a minute left to seal the contest.

The Bulldogs could not overcome five turnovers and only 64 yards rushing, as Florida racked up 156 yards on the ground and outgained Georgia 319-215.

The Gators took the opening kickoff and marched 62 yards for a touchdown. Leak fumbled on the first play from scrimmage, but one of his offensive linemen fell on the ball and the Florida offense methodically marched down the field.

Leak completed a pair of passes, including one to convert 3rd-and-4, before leaving in favor of freshman Tim Tebow, who raced 20 yards to the 14 on his first snap. Caldwell then took a reverse soon after and scored on a 12-yard run for a 7-0 lead.

Georgia managed one first down in the first quarter as the contest evolved into a defensive struggle.

After another Bulldog punt early in the second period, Leak found Caldwell with a 40-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 14-0.

Caldwell finished with eight catches for 88 yards and had five carries for another 28 yards.

The Bulldogs finally reached midfield late in the second quarter, but Stafford was intercepted at the 25-yard line.

Florida then marched back into Georgia territory, but Leak threw incomplete on fourth down at the 32-yard line in the final minute and the Gators went into the break with a 14-point edge.

The Gator defense came up with the next score on the first play after the second half kickoff. Lumpkin fumbled after a loss of five yards and Ray McDonald picked up the loose ball inside the 10-yard line before stumbling into the end zone.

Georgia's problems continued on the next offensive series, as Stafford was sacked and fumbled at the Bulldog 44. The Gators, though, could not take advantage, as Chris Hetland hit the right upright on a 39-yard field goal try.

Florida finally made a mistake the next time it had the ball, as Leak was picked off by Tony Taylor near midfield.

The Bulldogs were able to convert, as a 17-yard pass on first down helped set up a 13-yard touchdown scramble by Stafford to make it a 21-7 game with 4:40 left in the third period.

Georgia's defense forced a quick punt, but the Gators retained possession when the short kick clipped Kelin Johnson on the leg and Reggie Nelson recovered for Florida at the Bulldog 40.

Again, though, the Gators failed to capitalize when Hetland missed a 42-yard field goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter.

Georgia quickly moved from its own 25 into Florida territory with the aid of a fourth-down conversion, but Stafford, trying to throw the ball away while being chased, was picked off by Reggie Lewis at the Gator six with 9:34 remaining.

The Bulldogs got the ball back two plays later when Tebow fumbled and Johnson made amends for his earlier miscue with a recovery at the 14-yard line. Shortly after, Lumpkin atoned for his earlier fumble with an eight-yard touchdown run to make it a 21-14 game with 8:17 left.

Lumpkin carried 11 times for 43 yards. Stafford completed just 13-of-33 passes for 151 yards with a pair of interceptions.

Game Notes

Tebow rushed six times for 36 yards in his limited action behind Leak, who had 15 yards on five carries...Percy Harvin led Florida with 37 yards on eight carries...Florida overcame 10 penalties for 75 yards...Georgia still leads the all-time series, 45-37-2.
