Trailing 33-10 late in the third quarter, USC rallied to score 21 unanswered points in what appeared to be a miracle comeback. However, Oregon State defensive end Jeff Van Orsow batted down John David Booty's pass during a two- point conversion attempt with seven seconds left to secure the win, ending the Trojans' 18-game road winning streak.
"I loved the comeback, but we aren't patting ourselves on the back," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "We thought we were going to win all the way until we didn't."
Matt Moore finished 21-of-32 passing for 262 yards and one touchdown, while Clinton Polk rushed for 100 yards on 22 carries for the Beavers (5-3, 3-2 Pac-10), who registered their third straight win.
Joe Newton caught four passes for 41 yards and a score in the victory.
Booty threw for 406 yards on 24-of-39 passing with three touchdowns and one interception for the Trojans (6-1, 4-1 Pac-10), who had a 27-game Pac-10 winning streak snapped.
"We've got guys who know how to win," Booty said. We've won up until now. I don't think anyone's worried or down or anything."
Steve Smith had 11 catches for 258 yards and two scores and Chauncey Washington carried the ball 18 times for 81 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
The Trojans took advantage of a botched punt attempt by Oregon State to start the rally, as the snap flew wide of Kyle Loomis to give USC the ball at the Beavers 16. On the third play, Booty found Fred Davis in the end zone for a four-yard TD pass with 23 seconds left in the third.
Following a three-and-out by Oregon State, USC took over on the Beavers 49, and on the third play, Booty hit Smith for a 37-yard TD pass. Washington's two-point conversion run made it a 33-25 contest early in the fourth.
Later in the quarter, Oregon State had an opportunity to extend its lead, but Alexis Serna missed a 42-yard field goal try.
The Trojans cut within two on Smith's two-yard TD catch with seven seconds left in the game, but Booty's pass never found Dwayne Jarrett, as Van Orsow came up with the biggest play of the game by deflecting the ball at the line of scrimmage. Oregon State then recovered the onsides kick to secure the upset.
Oregon State opened the game with a 10-play, 69-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead after Moore punched it in from one-yard out. Moore hit on all seven of his passes for 75 yards during the scoring march.
On their ensuing possession, the Trojans drove all the way down to the Beavers nine-yard line as Smith's 53-yard catch keyed the drive. However, on 1st-and-goal, Bryan Payton intercepted a Booty pass in the end zone and ran 50 yards down the right sideline to give Oregon State the ball at USC's 48. The Trojans, though, made up for the turnover by blocking Serna's 25-yard field goal attempt.
The Trojans tied the game on Washington's two-yard touchdown run just under four minutes into the second. Washington carried the ball six times for 32 yards, including a ten-yard gain on 3rd-and-6 to keep the drive alive.
Serna made good on his next field goal attempt with a 47-yard boot to put the Beavers up by three with 6:53 remaining in the second. Stroughter hauled in a 15-yard throw from Moore while Brandon Powers had a 23-yard reception.
USC's next possession stalled on the third play when Booty fumbled during a rushing attempt and Oregon State's Bryant Cornell recovered the ball at the Trojans 27. On 2nd-and-10, Moore hit Stroughter over the middle for 23 yards, but after a two-yard run by Polk, Moore was sacked twice and the Beavers settled for a 31-yard field goal by Serna for a 13-7 lead.
A third turnover by USC, this time on a fumble by Washington that was recovered by Alan Darlin during the Trojans ensuing drive, led to more points for Oregon State. Serna split the uprights with a 53-yard boot with 1:03 to play until halftime.
USC, though, cut its deficit to 16-10 as Booty's 41-yard toss to Smith set up Mario Danelo's 29-yard chip shot with seven seconds left.
Newton made a leaping catch in the back of the end zone to put the Beavers up 23-10 with 9:27 remaining in the third. The six-play, 59-yard march was highlighted by a 37-yard pass from Moore to Stroughter for a first down at the Trojans 20.
After a three-and-out by USC, Stroughter took Greg Woidneck's punt and scampered 70 yards down the left sideline for the score to put Oregon State up by 20.
Just 32 seconds later, Washington fumbled for the second time on the first play of the Trojans' possession and Oregon State's Isaiah Cook came up with the ball. Serna's 20-yard chip shot padded the Beavers' lead to 33-10 with 4:51 remaining in the third.
Game Notes
USC's 18-game winning streak in October games was also snapped...Jarrett finished with 63 yards on four receptions...Oregon State's Anthony Wheat-Brown had three catches for 42 yards...The Trojans still lead the series, 57-9-4.
