While the Buckeyes still need to visit Champagne for a battle against Illinois and Evanston to square off with Northwestern, a Big Ten title and trip to Glendale, Arizona for the national championship game may rest on a November 18 clash in Columbus with heated rival and second-ranked Michigan.
Ohio State (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten) didn't gaze into the future at the maize and blue, instead dominating a Minnesota club fresh off a 10-9 victory over 1-AA power North Dakota State. The win was Ohio State's national-best 16th straight, with its last setback coming under the lights in Happy Valley against Penn State on October 8, 2005.
"It is the ultimate goal of any defense to not allow any points," said Marcus Freeman. "It is a really good feeling, but as a defense we still have a lot of work to do."
The Buckeyes have won every game during the 2006 campaign by at least 17 points, demonstrating their season-long dominance.
Antonio Pittman, the unheralded member of a dynamic offense that features Smith, speedster Ted Ginn Jr. and physical wideout Anthony Gonzalez, rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns while Chris Wells piled up 90 yards and another score when the game was well in hand.
Bryan Cupito completed 13-of-25 passes for 120 yards with three interceptions and Amir Pinnix struggled to collect 46 yards on the ground for the Golden Gophers (3-6, 0-5), who now must win out against Indiana, Michigan State and Iowa to become bowl eligible.
"Today we faced an incredible football team," said coach Glen Mason. "We have had many problems and we continue to have problems. It is hard to get past those problems and get better when you play a team like Ohio State."
The Buckeyes wasted no time reaching the end zone, taking their first drive right past, around and eventually through the Minnesota defense. Smith aired it out just one time on a march featuring a heavy dose of Pittman, who capped the eight-play, 57-yard drive with a 10-yard burst off left end.
After another Golden Gopher punt, Smith's 30-yard screen pass to Pittman set up Aaron Pettrey's 42-yard field goal for a 10-0 edge with 5:49 left in the first quarter.
The Buckeyes coughed up the ball on their next two drives -- one inside the Minnesota 10-yard line -- before putting together a 71-yard march that ran the offensive gambit. After four straight runs, Smith found Gonzalez near the sideline for 11 yards and later worked outside the hash again to Ginn for 15 yards. A well-thrown lob to Brian Robiskie, who shielded his body and came up with the 18-yard pass for a touchdown, upped the advantage to 17-0 with 3:49 left in the half.
Cupito was picked off on the initial series of the second half, and the Buckeyes reached paydirt once again. The multi-talented quarterback slashed through the middle of the defense for a 21-yard touchdown run with 12:41 remaining in the stanza.
The Buckeye machine continued to run like clockwork on another third-quarter series, as they converted a Cupito interception into a touchdown. Pittman bounced off the right end and won a foot race to the end zone from 13 yards out for a 30-0 edge.
Wells added a two-yard plunge in garbage time to make the score 37-0 with 13:33 on the clock. Back-up quarterback Justin Zwick's one-yard touchdown run then capped the scoring.
Game Notes
Head coach Jim Tressel's Buckeyes are 46-4 when they pile up at least 24 points...The Buckeyes now lead the all-time series 39-7, including victories in 20 of the last 23 in Columbus...Gonzalez left the game late in the first half with a mild concussion...Ohio State outrushed Minnesota 266-47 and piled up 484 total yards to 182 for the Golden Gophers...Golf icon and Ohio State alum Jack Nicklaus dotted the "I" -- an Ohio State marching band tradition -- prior to the contest.
