Irons was the workhouse, carrying the ball 23 times for 106 yards, while Lester ran for 49 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers ran for 175 yards on the game, over doubling Ole Miss' total of 86. Auburn (8-1, 5-1 SEC) remained a game in the loss column behind division-leading Arkansas, which already knocked off the Tigers, 27-10, this season.
"They were fired up to play," said Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. "We were here to try to make ourselves better and thankfully at the end we had enough points to win. That's a sign of a good team, you find a way to win on the road."
Cox spread the ball around, with Courtney Taylor leading the way with eight catches for 108 yards. Taylor came into the game as the team's leading receiver with 35 catches, just over twice as many as the closest teammate Rodgeriqus Smith with 17.
Brent Schaeffer, a transfer from fellow SEC stalwart Tennessee, completed only 8-of-16 passes for 161 yards with one touchdown and two costly interceptions that led to 10 Tigers points.
Early it looked like Ole Miss (2-7, 1-5), which had to win out to become bowl eligible, was determined on doing just that against the highly-ranked Tigers.
"Obviously our team battled hard against Auburn," said Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron. "We had some chances to make some plays on third down and we didn't."
Schaeffer put a jolt into the Halloween weekend crowd almost immediately, finding Robert Lane down the seam for 37 yards on the second play from scrimmage. On third down, Schaeffer eluded the rush and pitched a strike to Shay Hodge for 12 yards to the Tigers 27-yard line, setting up Mico McSwain's touchdown burst on the next play with 12:17 on the clock.
Auburn absorbed the initial blow and fought back, mixing a heavy dose of Irons and rollout passes by Cox. The southpaw threw a pair of 11-yard strikes early in the march, then after several running plays, Cox found Prech Rodriguez on 3rd-and-7 for eight yards to the Ole Miss 13-yard line.
The 15-play, 70-yard march resulted in a Cox 13-yard touchdown toss to Smith.
Cox completed 21-of-34 passes on the contest.
The remainder of the half was a battle of defensive wills, and the second half began with the Rebels forcing a quick punt then marching for a field goal to seize the lead. Schaeffer and Lane produced another big pitch-and-catch, a 41- yard connection to the Auburn 9-yard line. The march stalled, and Joshua Shene booted a 29-yard chip shot through the uprights for a 10-7 edge.
About midway through the period, an errant toss by Schaeffer led to an Auburn touchdown. The southpaw's pass on the first play of a drive was picked off by Eric Brock at the Ole Miss 41-yard line.
Cox found Taylor for 26 yards and Lester plowed the ball to paydirt from five yards out for a 14-10 advantage.
Schaeffer was intercepted again on the next series, and Auburn capitalized, this time with a John Vaughn 31-yard field goal for a 17-10 lead with 55 ticks left in the quarter.
In a drive spanning the end of the third and beginning stages of the fourth quarter, Ole Miss drove 60 yards against the vaunted Tigers defense for a game-tying touchdown.
A 15-yard personal foul penalty aided some Rebels trickery. Schaeffer pitched the ball to Bruce Hall, who tossed it back to Schaeffer for a nine-yard gain to the Tigers 13-yard line. After a pair of runs and a defensive holding penalty, Schaeffer bootlegged to his left and lobbed a pass to a wide open Lawrence Lilly in the back of the end zone with 12:06 left.
The Tigers went back to their bread and butter, rolling out Cox on a 10-play, 51-yard drive for a short Vaughn field goal. The southpaw found Lee Guess for a 26-yard completion, aiding a march that concluded with Vaughn's 20-yard kick.
Vaughn's 29-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining sealed the victory.
