The Buckeyes, who beat Minnesota 44-0 on Saturday to improve to 9-0 this season, have a BCS average of .9864. That is an entire .01 increase over last week's total, but their lead over the Wolverines was cut nearly in half.
Michigan, which beat Northwestern 17-3, has an average of .9697 this week, trailing OSU by just .167. Last week, the Buckeyes' lead was .313 over their conference rival. The two teams will meet in Columbus on November 18.
The top two teams in the final BCS standings, which will be released on December 3, will play in the BCS Championship Game on January 8 in Glendale, Arizona.
Southern California dropped out of the third spot in this week's poll after suffering a 33-31 setback to Oregon State on Saturday. The Trojans (6-1) fell to eighth and now need a whole lot of help to get back into the National Championship picture.
West Virginia (7-0), which had a bye this week, benefited from the USC loss, moving up one spot to third with a BCS average of .7862.
Florida (7-1) sits in the fourth spot followed by Louisville (7-0) at five. The Cardinals and Mountaineers with battle on Thursday.
Auburn (8-1) and Texas (8-1) hold spots six and seven, respectively, and following USC is Notre Dame (7-1) and California (7-1).
Notre Dame will automatically qualify for the BCS if it is in the top eight of the final BCS standings.
Spots 11 through 15 are held by Tennessee (7-1), Rutgers (7-0), Arkansas (7-1), Boise State (8-0) and Boston College (7-1). Wisconsin (8-1), LSU (6-2), Oklahoma (6-2), Clemson (7-2) and Georgia Tech (6-2) round out the top 20. Texas A&M (8-1), Oregon (6-2), Washington State (6-3), Wake Forest (7-1) and Virginia Tech (6-2) finish out the poll.
The BCS title game is new to the series this year, as the other top bowl games -- Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta -- will still play their traditional games on New Year's Day or soon after. The BCS title game will rotate among the four traditional sites -- Pasadena, Miami, New Orleans and Arizona -- giving each of the venues two games in one particular season.
The champions from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac-10 and SEC make up six of the 10 teams in the five BCS games. The other four spots go to at-large teams that have at least nine wins and are ranked among the top 14 in the final BCS standings.
One team from among the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference or the Western Athletic Conference automatically qualify for a BCS game if either: such team is ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS standings, or, such team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS standings and its ranking in the final BCS standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.
The BCS system uses a pair of human polls -- the Harris Interactive and the USA Today -- as well as six computer rankings. Each poll counts one-third toward the overall score, while the average of the computers completes the formula.
