Oklahoma was No. 1 two weeks ago and still hasn't lost this season, but LSU's convincing win at West Virginia last Saturday moved the Tigers ahead of the Sooners and the Crimson Tide's emphatic victory at the Swamp this past Saturday swayed enough voters to again drop Bob Stoops' team another spot.
LSU, following a 35-7 thumping of Kentucky on Saturday, received 40 first- place votes -- actually two fewer than last week -- and 1,473 total points from a nationwide media panel.
Alabama began the season No. 2 and dipped to three as LSU began dominating its difficult early-season schedule. The Crimson Tide came away with a 38-10 win in Gainesville on Saturday and picked up 12 first-place votes, seven more than last week.
Oklahoma, following 10-point wins over Florida State and Missouri, easily dispatched an overmatched Ball State squad on Saturday, 62-6. The Sooners garnered seven No. 1 tallies, down five from last week, but they'll get a chance to change some voters' minds this coming Saturday in the annual Red River Rivalry game against Texas, which is ranked 11th this week.
Wisconsin moved up three spots to fourth after a 48-17 pounding of Nebraska and is followed by Boise State, which dropped one spot and still retained its one first-place vote after a 30-10 win over Nevada.
Oklahoma State, Stanford, Clemson, Oregon and Arkansas complete this week's top 10. Clemson vaulted five places from 13th after a 23-3 humbling of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg for its third straight win over a top-25 foe, while Arkansas rose eight spots after rallying for a 42-38 win over Texas A&M in Arlington.
The second 10 consists of Texas, Michigan, Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Auburn, West Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, Illinois and Kansas State. Nebraska tumbled six places after its rude welcome to the Big Ten, while Georgia Tech moved up eight spots from 21st following a 10-point win at NC State.
Auburn and Kansas State are this week's newcomers. Auburn has been ranked twice before this season and again entered the poll after claiming a 16-13 win at South Carolina, which tumbled eight places from 10th. Kansas State is unbeaten after four games and on Saturday pulled out a 36-35 win against Baylor, which dropped 10 places from 15th to 25th after the loss.
The last five teams ranked this week are Virginia Tech, Arizona State, Florida State, Texas A&M and Baylor. Virginia Tech plummeted 10 spots after its home loss to Clemson, while Texas A&M also tumbled 10 places from 14th with its second consecutive narrow defeat. The Aggies dropped a 30-29 decision to Oklahoma State last Saturday.
South Florida and TCU dropped completely out of this week's poll. South Florida, aside from its season-opening win at Notre Dame, had beaten up on Ball State, Florida A&M and UTEP before a humbling 44-17 loss to Pittsburgh on Thursday and dropped out from 16th. TCU was 20th before a 40-33 overtime loss to SMU on Saturday.
In addition to the Oklahoma/Texas tussle, the SEC provides the other two ranked matchups next Saturday as Florida visits LSU and Arkansas hosts Auburn.
