James, who had rushed for 239 yards and a touchdown in the game for the ninth- ranked Ducks, took a handoff up the middle on the three-yard line and fell backwards awkwardly on his right arm as he placed it behind him to break his fall.
His arm twisted behind him and he stayed on the ground for a while in a great amount of pain. Trainers came out and put his arm in an air cast before he was taken off the field.
He was later diagnosed with a dislocated right elbow and it was put it back in place by team doctors.
"My arm just got knocked out of place," James said after the game. "That's football, it's a contact sport."
James finished third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy last season and also won the 2010 Doak Walker Award, given annually to the nation's top running back.
The consensus All-American led the nation in rushing with 1,682 yards while adding 22 total touchdowns. He gained 6.0 yards per carry for the Ducks, helping them average an FBS-best 49.3 points per game and complete an undefeated regular season.
