Washington leads No. 13 Georgia Tech over Maryland

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Tevin Washington burned Maryland not so much with his arm, but with his legs on Saturday.

The quarterback ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 114 yards on 6-of-19 passing with one interception, leading No. 13 Georgia Tech to a 21-16 win over the Terrapins.

David Sims gained 83 yards on 14 carries and Stephen Hill hauled in two passes for 50 yards for the Yellow Jackets (6-0, 3-0 ACC).

Maryland's backup quarterback C.J. Brown rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown and threw for 36 yards and one interception after replacing starter Danny O'Brien late in the second quarter. O'Brien completed just 1- of-6 passes for 17 yards with one interception.

Davin Meggett collected 89 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for the Terrapins (2-3, 1-1).

Following a three-and-out by Maryland to open the game, the Yellow Jackets began the ensuing drive from their own 37-yard line. A 21 yard pass to Tyler Melton and a 21 yard scamper by Washington helped Georgia Tech move 63 yards in eight plays before Washington ran seven yards on third down for the score and an early 7-0 lead.

Maryland cut the lead to four on its next posession when O'Brien led a 14- play, 68-yard drive. Nick Ferrara capped the march with a 30-yard field goal.

Early in the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets added to their lead when Zach Laskey returned a Maryland punt 26 yards to give Georgia Tech excellent field position at the Terrapin 33. The Yellow Jackets went to the ground for the duration of their drive, rushing the ball seven times before Orwin Smith finished it off with a 10-yard touchdown run for a 14-3 advantage at halftime.

Tony Zenon took the second half kickoff back 79 yards, setting up the Yellow Jacket offense with first down from the Maryland 17. Washington then bowled his way into the end zone on third-and-goal from the three for his second score of the game, and a 21-3 margin.

"It was a sideline return to the right and I was supposed to set it up by pushing up and then going out and I set it up pretty good and the guys did a good job of blocking and I hit the hole," Zenon said. "The only person I saw I think was the kicker that I had to beat. I tried to cut up from him and keep running and I didn't notice the guy who was behind me and he caught me."

Late in the third stanza, Maryland had a chance for a touchdown when Brown led the offense down to the Goergia Tech eight-yard line before the drive stalled and the Terrapins were unable to score thanks to three imcompletions, including one on fourth down, and a rush attempt for no gain.

Early in the final quarter, the Terrapins showed signs of life when Brown took the snap on first down from the shotgun, faked an inside handoff and scampered around the right edge and down the sideline for a 77-yard touchdown sprint, pulling Maryland to within 21-10.

Maryland pulled even closer with just over 7 1/2 minutes to go in the game when Brown led a 10-play, 53-yard drive and Meggett punched the ball into the end zone from the one-yard line to make it 21-16. Brown's pass attempt for the two-point conversion fell incomplete.

After a Georgia Tech three-and-out, Maryland got the ball back with just over four minutes remaining and a chance to take the lead. They made it up to their own 46 before incompletions on third and fourth down turned the ball back over to Georgia Tech.

"We're disappointed that we didn't win the game today, but very pleased with how hard our guys played for 60 minutes," Maryland head coach Randy Edsall said. "I thought, defensively, we played extremely well. Offensively, we were inconsistent, and we had a couple of breakdowns in the special teams. But again, we were pleased with how hard our guys played for 60 minutes."

The Yellow Jackets ran out the clock to seal the victory.
