James, last year's Heisman Trophy runner-up, was sidelined with an elbow injury, while quarterback Darron Thomas suffered a knee injury early in the second half Saturday.
Still, the Ducks (5-1, 3-0 Pac-12) had enough weapons to maintain their status as the conference favorites. Barner rushed for 171 yards and one TD on 31 carries, while De'Anthony Thomas scored twice for Oregon, which has won seven straight against the Sun Devils.
Brock Osweiler threw for 291 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions on 29-of-46 attempts for ASU (5-2, 3-1), which had won three straight to start Pac-12 play.
Barner fumbled on his first carry, and ASU turned it into seven points when Osweiler found Gerell Robinson for a 20-yard score.
Osweiler countered De'Anthony Thomas' 16-yard TD with a 25-yard scoring strike to Mike Willie later in the opening quarter.
Darron Thomas threw a pair of scores around an Alex Garoutte field goal in the second quarter, the first a 28-yarder to Lavasier Tuinei before finding David Paulson for a 12-yard score and a 21-17 lead heading to the break.
Thomas was injured on the first possession in the second half, and the visitors took the lead on Cameron Marshall's four-yard TD run, which was set up by Jamal Miles' 51-yard scamper.
With backup Bryan Bennett under center, Oregon embarked on a six-play, 68-yard drive that De'Anthony Thomas ended with a three-yard score with 10 1/2 minutes showing in the third.
Bennett showed his running skills on the Ducks' next touch, picking up gains of 36 and 18 yards to move into enemy territory. Barner ran in for a five-yard TD two plays later.
Alejandro Maldonado gave Oregon a 38-24 lead with a 37-yard field goal on the second play of the fourth quarter.
Garoutte and Maldonado traded field goals later in the frame, and Oregon's Anthony Gildon sealed the win with an interception in the end zone in the final minute.
