Co-offensive coordinator Mark Hutson has been named as the interim coach for the final six games of the regular season. The school will begin a nationwide search for a full-time replacement.
Toledo was in his fifth season with the Green Wave and has compiled a dismal 15-40 mark. Tulane is just 2-5 this season and riding a four-game losing streak.
"We are very appreciative of the job Bob and his staff did both on and off the field during their 4 1/2 seasons," said Tulane athletic director Rick Dickson in a statement. "A transition like this is always difficult and we are very grateful that Bob and his assistants will ensure that the program can continue to move forward without interruption for the next six games."
Before taking over at Tulane in December 2006, Toledo was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at New Mexico for one season. He had been retired for three years after a seven-year stint as head coach at UCLA.
"I want to thank Rick for giving me the opportunity to coach at Tulane," said Toledo. "I also want to thank my coaching staff for their hard work, dedication and loyalty, as well as the players. We worked extremely hard and I feel like we did our best. Our student-athletes performed superbly in the classroom and in the community and Tulane has some very talented players that will help this program become successful. I wish the team and coaches the best for the remainder of the season."
Toledo had a mark of 49-32 with the Bruins from 1996-2002, winning two Pac-10 championships. He was fired after a 7-5 finish in 2002.
The 65-year-old San Jose native has also been a head coach at Cal-Riverside (1974-75) and the University of the Pacific (1979-82). He has an overall head coaching record of 93-108.
Hutson has been an interim coach before, serving Eastern Illinois in that role in 2006. He guided the Panthers to a record of 8-5, including 7-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference, then joined Toledo's staff at Tulane.
The 45-year-old Arkansas native was a lineman on Oklahoma's national championship team in 1985 and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Sooners in 1990. He has also been an assistant at Murray State, Boise State, Arkansas and Eastern Illinois.
