Sixth-ranked Cowboys and Tigers collide in Columbia

Columbia, MO (Sports Network) - One of 10 unbeatens left in the FBS ranks, the sixth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys put their flawless record on the line this weekend, as they invade Columbia to take on the Missouri Tigers in Big 12 action.

Mike Gundy's Cowboys have jumped out to a 6-0 start, good enough to land them in the fourth spot in the first official BCS rankings this week. The team is 3-0 in conference play and comes into this contest off a 38-26 win at Texas last weekend. It marked the eighth straight road win for OSU, the second longest active streak in the nation.

Gundy elaborated on his team's recent road success at his weekly press conference.

"We have better players now. We have more depth. Our players believe in themselves enough to go play the game. A lot of playing on the road is coach's talk. For example last Saturday, there were 100,000 on Texas's team. We had a great crowd, but we only get so many tickets. We had 5,000 on our team for what it's worth. We still have to be able to overcome difficult situations, especially when the momentum swings like it did last Saturday. I do not know what the reason is, other than our players believe in themselves. They just keep playing."

Gray Pinkel's Tigers have had their ups and downs this season and it is apparent in the team's 3-3 record. Big 12 play hasn't helped, as the team dropped its first two league affairs to Oklahoma (38-28) and Kansas State (24-17), before finally breaking into the win column last weekend with a rout of Iowa State (52-17).

Missouri holds a 28-22 advantage in this series, but Oklahoma State has won two straight and three of the last four meetings.

The Cowboys simply overwhelm the competition with superior firepower. The team ranks second nationally in scoring (49.2 ppg), passing (395.7 ypg) and total offense (551.2 ypg).

Quarterback Brandon Weeden has been one of the most productive passers in the country thus far, completing 72.7 percent of his passes, for 2,098 yards and 16 TDs.

It helps to have Biletnikoff Award winner Justin Blackmon on the outside. The All-American wideout has already caught 53 balls, for 608 yards and seven TDs thus far.

Despite a pass-happy offense, the Cowboys are certainly capable of running the football (155.5 ypg), behind the rushing exploits of Joseph Randle (552 yards, nine TDs) and Jeremy Smith (354 yards, seven TDs). In fact, Smith is coming off a huge game against Texas in which he rushed for 140 yards and two TDs on just seven carries.

Its a good thing the offense has the ability to put points on the scoreboard in bunches, because the defense has allowed the opposition to do the same on a regular basis. OSU is allowing 27.3 ppg this season, while yielding a generous 426.7 yards per game. In particular, the run defense needs to shore things up at 176.7 ypg.

The team has had success rushing the passer, collecting 19 sacks on the year, led by senior DE Jamie Blatnick (27 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 5.0 sacks). Sophomore safety Daytawion Lowe is another playmaker on the defensive side of things, pacing the Cowboys in tackles (38), with two sacks and three forced fumbles.

The Tigers know how to move the chains as well, ranking 13th in the nation in total offense at nearly 500 yards per game (496.2). However, the preferred mode of travel is via the run, ranking 14th nationally at an impressive 236.5 ypg.

Tailback Henry Josey headlines the play in the backfield, leading the Big 12 in rushing at 119.5 ypg. He has already amassed 717 yards on an eye-popping 9.7 yards per carry. The ground game gets help from quarterback James Franklin, who has rushed for 390 yards (65.0 ypg) and seven TDs thus far.

Franklin is also adept at throwing the football, completing over 61 percent of his passes, for 1,488 yards and 10 TDs. T.J. Moe is the top target downfield, hauling in 31 passes, for 375 yards and two scores.

The Missouri defense has been solid for the most part, allowing 20.3 ppg and 337.8 total yards. Although the unit is allowing 224.7 yards passing per game, the Tigers have only given up seven touchdowns through the air.

Linebackers Andrew Wilson (team-high 48 tackles, 5.0 TFLs) and Luke Lambert (36 tackles, 6.0 TFLs, one INT and two fumble recoveries) lead the way in the middle. Defensive end Brad Madison is the team's most disruptive influence upfield, with team-highs in both TFLs (6.5) and sacks (3.5).

Pinkel recognizes his team is battling a potent opponent this week.

"Oklahoma State is obviously a good football team. Brandon Weeden is a very impressive quarterback. His accuracy, how he manages the game, his maturity, all those things. Justin Blackmon is a great player, also. They really have a lot of good players. That's why they are undefeated and that's why they are nationally ranked where they are."
