Miller lifts Hurricanes over Yellow Jackets

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Lamar Miller ran for 93 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown as Miami-Florida took down 20th-ranked Georgia Tech, 24-7, at Sun Life Stadium.

Mike James also had a rushing touchdown while Jacory Harris completed just 8- of-23 passes for 140 yards with an interception for the Hurricanes (4-3, 2-2 ACC), who have won their past two games to move over .500 on the season.

"We did good moving the ball on the ground today," said James. "We were able to get a strong push off the line and we took advantage of that."

Tevin Washington was just 6-of-12 passing for 63 yards and a pick. He ran in the lone score of the game for the Yellow Jackets (6-2, 3-2), who have dropped their past two games after winning the first six of the season.

"I thought our kids played hard," said Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson. "I am frustrated that we couldn't find something to do better on offense, clearly they had a better plan than we did, because we couldn't get any rhythm, couldn't get anything going. We couldn't hit any good plays. We couldn't overcome the special teams that we had today, and that is a reflection on me."

Washington was picked off on his first attempt of the game and Miami took over at the Georgia Tech 46. Several plays later, Miller's 11-yard run set up a 1st-and-goal at the three and James punched the ball into the end zone on a second effort for a 7-0 lead with 8:17 left in the first.

The score remained that way until the second quarter when a special teams mishap from the Yellow Jackets turned into seven points for the Hurricanes.

A Dalton Botts punt from near midfield saw Zach Laskey muff the catch and JoJo Nicolas recover in the end zone for a 14-0 lead with 10:17 to play in the half.

Georgia Tech finally got its offense on track on its following touch as the team covered 92 yards over 20 plays with Washington taking the ball into the end zone himself on a sneak from the one-yard line to make it a 14-7 game with just 62 seconds left in the half.

However, Travis Benjamin returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards to give the Hurricanes the ball just past midfield. Harris then hit Tommy Streeter for 32 yards. Following an incompletion, Miller took the ball up the middle and into the end zone on a 14-yard score to make it a 21-7 game at the break.

The Yellow Jackets started the second half with the ball and pushed it across midfield, but a Washington pass on 4th-and-3 fell incomplete.

That was it for Georgia Tech, though, as the team didn't get the ball past midfield the rest of the way and Jake Wieclaw's 39-yard field goal just over a minute into the fourth accounted for the final score.

Game Notes

Georgia Tech hosts Clemson next Saturday...The Hurricanes host Virginia on Thursday...Miami has won the past three meetings with Georgia Tech...The two teams combined for just 473 yards of offense, with Miami totaling 262 yards...Washington had 36 rushing yards.
