The deal is effective as of December 2010, and runs through February 2018.
Kill signed a memorandum of agreement when he was originally hired on December 6, 2010. He coached the first seven games of the season without a signed contract.
"I'm glad it's now settled and we can move on from here," said Kill in a statement. "We are excited about the future of our program."
The Gophers are 1-6 in Kill's first year and will host the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday.
"This contract represents a significant commitment to coach Kill and our belief in his vision for Gopher football," said Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi in a statement. "He has proved over the past 10 months what a great fit he is at the University of Minnesota and I have been very impressed with him as both a coach and a person. We are lucky to have him and I am thrilled that we now have an agreement in place that has secured coach Kill as our head football coach well into the future."
The 50-year-old Kill has been hospitalized this season because of seizures, once when he collapsed on the sideline against New Mexico State on September 10.
Kill came to Minnesota after spending three seasons as head coach at Northern Illinois. He guided the Huskies to a record of 23-16 with three bowl game appearances during his tenure.
Prior to his stint at NIU, Kill posted a mark of 55-32 at Southern Illinois of the FCS (formerly Division I-AA). He was the Eddie Robinson Award winner as the I-AA Coach of the Year in 2004.
