According to the Big 12, the Mountaineers will begin competing with the 2012-13 athletic season. However, the Big East released a statement saying it is committed to enforcing its 27-month notification of departure.
West Virginia will become the fourth Big East school, and third active member, to defect in the past two months. In September, Syracuse and Pittsburgh were accepted into the ACC and earlier this month TCU, which was set to join the Big East next year, instead accepted an invitation to the Big 12.
"The addition of West Virginia, while expanding the reach of the Big 12, brings an impressive institution with esteemed academics and a proud athletic tradition into the conference," said Burns Hargis, chair of the Big 12 board of directors and president of Oklahoma State University. "This is another step in building a strong foundation for the future of the Big 12."
The ever-changing Big 12 will apparently remain at 10 teams, for now.
After Nebraska left for the Big Ten and Colorado departed for the Pac-12 this year, the conference that formed in 1996 with members from the old Big 8 and Southwest Conference was teetering on extinction as other schools were considering options.
Texas A&M finally decided to leave for the SEC in early September and Missouri is close to joining the Aggies in the football powerhouse. The Big 12 had already found one replacement, luring TCU away from the Big East. The Horned Frogs were set to join that now floundering conference next year.
West Virginia's decision not only strengthens the Big 12, but considerably weakens the Big East. In addition to TCU and now West Virginia, the Big East also lost Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC.
The Big East plans to hold Syracuse and Pittsburgh to its 27-month departure policy and said it will enforce it for West Virginia as well. That would keep the Mountaineers in the Big East through the 2012-13 year.
"This move by West Virginia does not come as a surprise," Big East commissioner John Marinatto said in a statement on Friday. "League officials, members of our conference and the candidate schools to whom we have been talking were aware of this possibility. We have taken West Virginia's possible departure into account as we have moved forward with our own realignment plans. West Virginia is fully aware that the Big East Conference is committed to enforcing the 27-month notification period for members who choose to leave the conference. We are confident that in the coming weeks we will complete our own realignment program, adding a number of high-quality members to remain among the top conferences in both football and basketball."
The Big East will now be left with just five members that play in the Football Bowl Subdivision: Rutgers, Connecticut, Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida.
Reports earlier this month indicated that the Big East was considering invites for Boise State, Air Force, Navy and Central Florida. Three other schools -- Houston, SMU and Temple -- were also reported to be in the mix.
Still, without Pittsburgh and Syracuse, and now West Virginia, the league's status as an automatic qualifier for the lucrative BCS bowl package will certainly come into question.
Louisville apparently threw a kink into the plans to announce West Virginia's addition to the Big 12 earlier this week. There were reports that Louisville alum and Kentucky senator Mitch McConnell had pushed the Big 12 to include Louisville in its expansion discussion.
West Virginia gives the Big 12 another strong football school, as the Mountaineers are considered the top program in the Big East. West Virginia also reached the Final Four in men's basketball just two years ago
"The Big 12 is a perfect fit for West Virginia University," said WVU president Dr. James P. Clements. "It is a strong conference that, like WVU, values quality academic and athletic programs, and has a great tradition of success. This is a very exciting time for WVU and Mountaineer nation. I am confident that the future of WVU athletics has never been more promising."
In addition to football and men's basketball, West Virginia competes in 15 other varsity sports. The Big 12 sponsors every Mountaineer sport with the exception of men's soccer and rifle.
