Top-ranked LSU hosts Florida in pivotal SEC bout

Baton Rouge, LA (Sports Network) - The eyes of the college football world will be on Baton Rouge this weekend as the top-ranked LSU Tigers welcome the ninth- ranked Florida Gators to town for an SEC showdown.

Through the first three games of this season, Florida appeared indestructible, tearing through the opposition without resistance. Then came a narrow victory over Ole Miss, followed by last weekend's shocking 20-17 loss to Auburn. Don't forget, it was Auburn that handed Florida its only loss last season. The Gators went on to win the national championship a year ago, and they are still in contention despite last weekend's letdown, but a loss this weekend to LSU would completely crush those hopes.

LSU has only lost twice at home in program history while ranked in the top five. The Tigers are the top-ranked team in the AP poll for the first time since 1959, and they moved to 5-0 with a 34-9 thrashing of Tulane last weekend. With Kentucky, Auburn and Alabama on the docket in succession after this weekend's tilt, the Bayou Bengals will certainly be tested in the weeks to come.

Florida holds a narrow 28-22-3 lead in the all-time series with LSU, and the Gators won last season's meeting by a 23-10 final.

Through the first three quarters of play against Auburn last weekend, Florida managed a grand total of three points. Finally, in the fourth quarter, standout quarterback Tim Tebow threw a short touchdown pass and ran for another score. Still, the Gators fell short, finishing the game with 14 first downs, 312 total yards and most importantly, 17 points. Two turnovers played a major role in the setback. Florida is averaging 42.8 ppg and 476.6 total ypg, but those big offensive numbers are more the result of the first three games than the last two. The Gators have scored 27 offensive touchdowns, 16 of which have come on the ground. Tebow leads the club with 433 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground. He has also completed 69.7 percent of his passes for 1,297 yards and 11 touchdowns with two interceptions. He remains a legitimate Heisman candidate. There is no shortage of weapons on the outside, and Percy Harvin is the best of the bunch.

Defensively, Florida surrendered two touchdowns to Auburn in the first half, and those two scoring drives spanned 86 and 80 yards, respectively. Florida did an admirable job against the run, holding Auburn to 99 rushing yards on 44 attempts. Clearly, that stat was aided by four sacks totaling 31 yards in losses, but the effort would still have been strong even without the sacks. The pass defense wasn't nearly as impressive, as the Tigers were able to complete 17-of-26 throws for 227 yards and no interceptions. Opponents are scoring 19.6 ppg against Florida, which is yielding 310.8 total ypg. The run defense has been stellar all season, limiting foes to 63.4 ypg and 2.2 ypc. Keep an eye on Derrick Harvey, as he has registered eight TFLs, including five sacks, in five outings.

LSU struggled offensively in the early part of the game against Tulane, and the result was an unimpressive 10-9 halftime lead. The Tigers finally got it going in the second half, scoring three touchdowns over the final 21 minutes to secure the victory. All four touchdowns scored by LSU in the tilt came on the ground, including two by Jacob Hester and two by Charles Scott. Only one of the touchdown drives spanned at least 50 yards, as the offense clearly benefited from outstanding field position. LSU finished the contest with 391 total yards, and Matt Flynn took almost every snap. On a down note, he was sacked six times by the mediocre Green Wave. LSU is scoring 39.8 ppg this season while racking up 440.2 total ypg. Of the 25 offensive touchdowns that the team has generated, 16 have come on the ground. Hester leads the squad with 327 rushing yards and four touchdowns, but LSU continues to involve many individuals in the running game. As for the quarterbacks, Ryan Perrilloux's numbers are clearly better than those of Matt Flynn, but the veteran Flynn continues to start.

The LSU Tigers may be the best defensive team in the nation. They yielded only nine points and 227 total yards in last week's clash, and even that stellar showing is considered passable by their lofty standards. Tulane relies heavily on its ground game to move the ball and score points, but the Green Wave finished with a mere 88 rushing yards. The pass defense was equally impressive, limiting Tulane to 12-of-32 completions. LSU's defensive stats thus far border on unbelievable, as the club is only allowing 6.4 ppg and 174.6 total ypg. Opponents have found running the football to be an futile approach, as the Tigers are yielding 39.0 ypg and 1.3 ypc on the ground. The pass defense has been equally strong, as only 62-of-151 throws have been completed by opposing quarterbacks with one touchdown and 10 interceptions.
