Nebraska enters this game having won eight straight against Big 12 North Division opponents, the longest such streak for the program since winning nine straight from 1998 to 2000. The Cornhuskers own a 4-1 record this season and are coming off a 35-17 victory over Iowa State on Saturday. That triumph marked the 32nd time in the last 33 seasons that Nebraska has opened league play with a victory and gave the club 15 straight wins over ISU in Lincoln.
Missouri, which was idle last weekend, figures to enter this home game well- rested and focused. The Tigers are 4-0 to date with four wins over rather weak non-conference opponents. Now, with Nebraska and Oklahoma on the schedule in back-to-back weeks, we will quickly find out if this team is worthy of its spot in the Top-25.
Nebraska owns a 63-43-3 advantage in the all-time series with Missouri, but the Tigers have won the last two meetings in Columbia. These teams are meeting as ranked foes for the first time since 1998.
Nebraska has been explosive on offense this season, as the club is racking up 35.8 ppg and 467.8 total ypg. Of the 22 touchdowns that the offense has posted in five contests, 12 scores have come on the ground. Marlon Lucky is the best of the team's tailbacks, as he has rushed for 565 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 5.2 ypc. As for the passing game, Sam Keller has completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 1,497 yards and nine touchdowns. Keller has, however, tossed seven interceptions and needs to take better care of the football. Lucky has caught 28 passes out of the backfield, nine more than any of his teammates. Clearly, he is a vital part of the offense. In the win over Iowa State last time out, Lucky showed off his explosiveness by racing 41 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Keller threw a pair of touchdowns in that clash.
The fact that Nebraska is yielding over 400 total yards per game is concerning for sure. The Cornhuskers are giving up 26.6 ppg and have surrendered 16 touchdowns to opposing offenses, including 11 rushing scores. Stopping the run has been a major problem area, as foes are racking up 189.6 ypg on 4.7 ypc. The pass defense has been more impressive, registering seven interceptions while yielding five scores. Opposing quarterbacks have completed barely over 50 percent of their passes against the Huskers. Bo Ruud made a huge play for the Nebraska defense in last weekend's win over Iowa State, as he intercepted a pass late in the third quarter and raced 93 yards for a touchdown. The Huskers allowed 28 first downs and 415 total yards, but three interceptions and a fumble recovery enabled them to limit the Cyclones to 17 points.
Missouri has been one of the nation's most potent offensive teams to date, as the club is averaging 42.0 ppg and 544.2 total ypg. The ground attack has been lethal, accounting for 200.0 ypg on 5.7 ypc. A few players have contributed to the running game, and Tony Temple leads all the backs with 353 rushing yards and three touchdowns. It has been the passing game, however, that has been the source of most points scored by Missouri. Chase Daniel has been phenomenal under center, completing 65.9 percent of his passes for 1,311 yards and 13 touchdowns with only four interceptions. Martin Rucker has a team-high 29 catches, while Will Franklin has four touchdown receptions. If Daniel can play well against both Nebraska and Oklahoma, he could emerge as a dark horse Heisman candidate. In the 38-17 victory over Illinois State last time out, Daniel threw three touchdown passes, and Temple reached the end zone twice.
Opponents are scoring 25.0 ppg against Missouri, which is yielding 434.5 total ypg. The Tigers have yielded 12 touchdowns to opposing offenses, split evenly between rushing and passing scores. There is plenty of room for improvement against both means of attack, and the defensive unit will clearly be tested over the next two weeks by a pair of explosive offenses. Missouri has made 11 takeaways, a strong total through five outings, but the team has managed only eight sacks. Sean Weatherspoon is tops with 44 tackles, and Stryker Sulak has posted three sacks. Against Illinois State, Missouri surrendered 397 total yards, a rather high figure considering the level of competition. The defense was on the field for almost 37 minutes, as the overall effort left much to be desired.
