Under the guidance of first year head coach Dennis Erickson, the Sun Devils have won their first five games, marking their first 5-0 start since 2004. Last weekend, the team hit the road for the first time this season, posting a convincing 41-3 victory over Stanford. It was the second Pac-10 win of the season for ASU, which will open up a two-game homestand against Washington on October 13th.
As for WSU, its struggles continued last weekend with a 48-20 loss at Arizona. It was the second consecutive setback by the Cougars, who are still in search of their first league win (0-2) of the season. Now at 2-3 overall, the team returns home, where it has posted a 2-0 record thus far.
Saturday's game marks the 34th meeting between ASU and WSU, with the Sun Devils holding a 19-12-2 edge in the all-time series. Last season, the Sun Devils pounded the Cougars, 47-14, in Tempe.
The Sun Devils have been electric on the offensive side of the ball this season, averaging a healthy 39.4 ppg on the strength of 448.4 total ypg. The team has thrived through the air (275.4 passing ypg), but has also had success on the ground (173.0 rushing ypg). Last weekend, ASU rolled up 440 yards of total offense, including 174 on the ground, in a lopsided victory over Stanford. Ryan Torain paced the ground attack with 103 yards on 16 carries, while Keegan Herring added 83 yards and two touchdowns on just eight totes. Torain and Herring have provided a nice complement to one another, and they have combined for 753 yards and eight scores on the ground this season. Quarterback Rudy Carpenter has also enjoyed a fast start to the season, completing 66.0 percent of his throws for 1,286 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Despite being sacked six times last weekend, Carpenter still had a productive game, passing for 259 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-27 tosses. His main target was Rudy Burgess, who hauled in seven balls for 137 yards and a score. Michael Jones was limited to just three catches for 26 yards last weekend, but he still leads the team with 20 receptions, 350 yards and five touchdowns.
The defense has matched the offenses's success thus far, as ASU is giving up a mere 13.0 ppg and only 278.2 total ypg. The unit has fared extremely well against the run, giving up just 80.6 ypg this season. Forcing turnovers is another strength of this defense, which has recorded 14 miscues, including 10 interceptions. Against Stanford last weekend, the Sun Devils allowed just three points and only 235 yards of total offense. The defense surrendered a season-low negative-two rushing yards, in addition to registering three turnovers and seven sacks. Robert James posted 11 stops in the win, while Dexter Davis notched 2.5 sacks. Omar Bolden also got involved, picking off his first career pass and taking 29 yards for a touchdown. For the year, James has been this unit's most productive player, as he leads the team in tackles (50) and TFLs (7.5) to go along with 2.5 sacks and three interceptions.
Offensively, the Cougars have fared well in their attempt to move the ball, as they are producing 29.0 ppg off the average of 418.4 total ypg. The team has really thrived through the air, throwing for 295.4 ypg compared to running for just 123.0 ypg. Last weekend, WSU racked up 418 yards of total offense, including 347 via the pass, but it still wasn't enough in 48-20 loss to Arizona. Quarterback Alex Brink continued his torrid start to the season, throwing for 347 yards and three scores in the losing cause. The talented gun slinger is in the midst of a great season, as he has completed an efficient 67.5 percent of his pass attempts for 1,459 yards. He has thrown an impressive 15 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He has done a nice job spreading the ball out as well, as four players have caught at least 20 passes thus far. Brandon Gibson leads all players on the roster with 34 catches, 487 receiving yards and five scores. Last weekend, Gibson pulled in 11 balls that went for 127 yards and a touchdown. In the backfield, Dwight Tardy has done a solid job this season, despite the Cougars' lack of dedication to the run game. For the year, Tardy has rushed for 396 yard and four scores, and he is currently the only player on the roster with over a 100 yards rushing.
The Cougars' weakness this season has come on defense, where they are giving up a way too high 36.4 ppg and an equally as bad 457.6 total ypg. The defense has really had trouble stopping opposing quarterbacks, allowing 290.4 ypg and 16 touchdowns through the air thus far. Last weekend, WSU was burnt by Arizona for 567 total yards, with 346 of those yards coming via the pass. The team allowed five passing touchdowns in the game and failed to record a single sack. Greg Trent posted nine stops in the loss, giving him a team-high 47 tackles for the year.
