Weber's field goal lets 18th-ranked Sun Devils slip past Cougars
Pullman, WA (Sports Network) - Thomas Weber kicked a 37-yard field goal with 50 seconds remaining to give 18th-ranked Arizona State the lead, and the Sun Devils held on to defeat Pac-10 foe Washington State, 23-20.After Romeen Abdollmohammadi's 38-yard field goal tied the game at 20-20 with just under four minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Arizona State, aided by a 15-yard penalty on Washington State, went right back down the field on its ensuing possession to regain the lead.
Three straight runs by Ryan Torain moved the Sun Devils to the Washington State 15-yard line, but the drive stalled from there and Arizona State settled for Weber's field goal with just under a minute to play.
The Cougars threatened on their last drive of the game thanks to Alex Brink's 35-yard completion to Jeshua Anderson. However, Abdollmohammadi pulled his 46- yard attempt wide left as Arizona State hung on for the win.
Rudy Carpenter recovered from two second half interceptions to throw for 217 yards and two touchdowns for the Sun Devils (6-0, 3-0 Pac-10), while Torain finished with 116 yards on 24 carries.
Alex Brink completed 27-of-50 passes for 369 yards with two touchdowns and a pick for the Cougars (2-4, 0-3), who lost for the first time at home.
The first half was a surprising defensive struggle until late in the second quarter, as Washington State took a 10-7 lead into the locker room.
Husain Adullah's second quarter interception of Carpenter led to Abdollmohammadi's 35-yard field goal. Two plays earlier, Brandon Gibson almost came up with a touchdown in the back of the end zone, but the Cougars wideout dropped the ball as he fell to the ground.
Arizona State's high-powered offense finally got going later in the second quarter with a 12 play, 72-yard drive to take the lead. On 4th-and-1 on the Washington State 37-yard line, Torain steamrolled a Cougars' defensive back to move the chains. A few plays later, Carpenter scrambled to his right and found Kyle Williams in the end zone with just under two minutes left in the half.
Washington State, however, answered right back as Brink hooked up with Anderson for a 47-yard gain to the Arizona State 32-yard line. Brink then found a wide open Gibson along the right sideline to make it 10-7 Washington State with just 40 seconds remaining before halftime.
Justin Tryon stepped in front of a Brink pass attempt in the third quarter and ran in back 69 yards to put Arizona State in front 14-10. Washington State took advantage of good field position later in the third quarter to regain the lead on Devin Frischknecht's 13-yard touchdown catch.
The Sun Devils responded on their ensuing drive as Carpenter found Brady Conrad in the end zone on 3rd-and-goal from the Washington State three-yard line. The Cougars blocked Weber's PAT attempt to keep it at 20-17.
Game Notes
Williams finished with six catches for 71 yards for Arizona State, while Conrad had four receptions for 36 yards...Arizona State owns a 20-12-2 edge in the all-time series.
