Grothe completed 17 of 27 passes for 122 yards with an interception and had 14 carries, while Amari Jackson caught six passes for 60 yards for South Florida (5-0), which was coming off a 21-13 win over West Virginia.
Rusty Smith threw for three touchdowns and an interception on 23-of-47 passing and 259 yards for Florida Atlantic (3-3), which was trying to rebound from a 45-17 setback to Kentucky on September 29th. Jason Harmon pulled in seven passes for 82 yards and a score, while DiIvory Edgecomb had three grabs for 74 yards and a TD. Cortez Gent contributed with seven catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Willie Rose carried 10 times for 59 yards and Charles Pierre chipped in with 57 yards on the ground on 12 rushes.
"It's a bittersweet defeat because we didn't take advantage of all the opportunities we had to win the game," FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger said. "The sweet part of it is that we played them as well as anybody has this season."
With the game tied at 7-7 entering the second half, USF wasted little time reclaiming the lead. Behind some strong running by Grothe and Williams, the Bulls went 76 yards on nine plays, with Williams running it in from nine yards out to make it a 14-7 game. The lead was short lived, however, as FAU went down the field with ease, stringing together an 8-play, 59-yard drive. Smith hit an outstretched Harmon in the end zone from five yards out to tie the contest with 9:41 left in the third.
The scoring continued on USF's next possession when Grothe ripped off a 32- yard TD run on fourth-and-one to put the Bulls back in front 21-14. Beginning at their own 46 after a short punt by FAU, Williams ran for 10 yards on the second play of the drive and Grothe connected with Jackson for nine more. Three plays later the Bulls' signal-caller ran it in for the score.
A 22-yard field goal by Warley Leroy cut the Owls' deficit to 21-17 with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Following some sloppy play by both squads in the early stages of the fourth quarter, USF got the ball back on a punt starting from its own 46 and Williams darted 54 yards for a score on the first play of the drive to give the Bulls a 28-17 advantage. FAU responded with a score of its own on the ensuing series when Smith hit Edgecomb across the middle and the running back took it 47 yards to the house to get the Owls within 28-23. The two-point conversion failed.
FAU got the ball back after the Bulls went three-and-out, but starting at the Owls 20, they couldn't muster any offense, running four unsuccessful plays. USF took over on downs and got some insurance when Williams scored on a nine- yard TD run to make it 35-23.
"Im really proud of our team," USF head coach Jim Leavitt added. "I thought they did a great job of handling adversity in this environment."
After both teams looked sluggish for most of the first quarter, with each squad missing short field goal attempts in windy conditions, USF finally got on the board with 13 seconds remaining in the period. Starting at their own 38-yard line, Williams ripped off a six-yard gain and Grothe rushed for another 17, moving the ball to the FAU 39. Two plays later it was Grothe connecting with Amari Jackson for a 29-yard gain and Williams capped the 7- play, 62-yard drive with a five-yard dash into the end zone, giving the Bulls the early lead.
Playing in strong winds, FAU put together a decent set on its ensuing possession behind a steady ground attack, with Edgecomb leading the way. The drive stalled at the Bulls 25 and FAU had to settle for a 42-yard field goal attempt by Leroy, but the kick sailed wide left.
Warley missed wide left from 45 yards out with a little over six minutes remaining in the half, but FAU finally got into the end zone just before the intermission. Following a Corey Small interception of Grothe and return to the Bulls 24, the Owls needed only four plays to put seven on the board. B.J. Manley had a two-yard rushing score called back due to a holding penalty, forcing a 3rd-and-11 situation at the USF 12, but FAU wasn't to be denied. Smith dropped back on the next play and found Gent in the front right corner of the end zone to tie the score at 7-7 heading into the half.
