Fourth-ranked Buckeyes roll past 23rd-ranked Purdue

West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Todd Boeckman was an efficient 17-for-29 for 200 yards and two touchdowns as fourth-ranked Ohio State made a strong statement with a 23-7 victory over 23rd-ranked Purdue at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Boeckman offset three interceptions by finding Ray Small (six catches, 70 yards) and Brian Hartline (four catches, 61 yards) for touchdowns, as the Buckeyes (6-0, 3-0 Big 10) moved into a tie for first place in the conference with Illinois, which toppled fifth-ranked Wisconsin earlier Saturday.

Brian Robiskie hauled in six passes for 64 yards, while Chris Wells powered the ground game with 18 carries for 85 yards. The Buckeyes defense was stingy all night, shutting the Boilermakes out before a meaningless score in the final seconds.

Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter finished with 268 yards passing, but completed just 31-of-60 passes and was sacked three times. No Boilermaker rushed for more than 20 yards, and dynamic receiver Dorien Bryant was completetly shut down, catching two passes for minus-four yards.

Greg Orton had 10 catches for 91 yards and Dustin Keller caught seven passes for 101 yards, but Purdue was unable capitalize on any of its drives.

The Boilermakers (5-1, 1-1 Big 10) head to Michigan next Saturday.

"I asked (Ohio State head coach Jim) Tressel before the game if this was the best defense he's ever had, and he said 'It might be,'" said Purdue head coach Joe Tiller. "I really like their linebacking corps. I thought our defense played well and created some turnovers, but it seemed like every turnover was inside the five-yard-line, which is the same as a punt. I'm glad we got the turnovers, but I think the position where they occurred put a lot of pressure on the offense."

The Buckeyes opened the scoring with just over eight minutes to go in the first when Boeckman hooked up with Small from 26 yards out for a 7-0 lead.

Purdue then went three-and-out, and a short punt gave OSU the ball in Boliermakers territory. Boeckman quickly turned the field position into seven more points when he found Hartline on a slant pattern for a six-yard touchdown.

Ohio State extended its lead early in the second with an eight-play, 34-yard drive that resulted in a 44-yard Ryan Pretorius field goal.

In the third, another short punt allowed Hartline to position Ohio State inside the Boilermakers 30. The Buckeyes hardly moved the ball, but still converted the excellent field position into three points on a 39-yarder from Pretorius.

On the following drive, Boeckman hit Hartline over the middle, who converted a short pass into a 41-yard gain. After a few bruising runs inside by Maurice Wells, OSU opted for another Pretorius field goal, this one from 23 yards four seconds into the fourth.

Purdue did mount a 13-play, 88-yard drive spanning 2:46 and ending with Painter finding Jeff Lindsay for a one-yard touchdown, denying the Buckeyes' bid for a shutout with just 10 seconds remaining in the game.

Game Notes

Purdue defensive end Anthony Heygood had 11 tackles and a sack...The Boilermakers were limited to four total yards on the ground...Ohio State lost the turnover battle four to none, but Purdue converted just six-of-20 third downs.
