After beating Florida two weeks ago in a huge road upset, Auburn carried the momentum into last weekend's 35-7 thrashing of Vanderbilt. The Tigers have now scored 110 points in their last three games after struggling to move the ball in the first three outings. They are 2-1 in league play, hoping to improve to 3-1 on Saturday.
As for Arkansas, the good news is that the team is riding a two-game winning streak that has enabled it to move to 3-2 on the season. Unfortunately, both SEC bouts to this point have resulted in defeat, and a victory this weekend is absolutely essential for the club's postseason aspirations. Last Saturday, the Hogs managed a 34-15 triumph over FCS foe Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Auburn holds a 9-6-1 edge in the all-time series with Arkansas, but the Razorbacks won last season's meeting by a 27-10 final.
Auburn is averaging 28.3 ppg and 342.7 total ypg, and the offense has picked up the pace lately after a rather sluggish start. The Tigers have scored 19 offensive touchdowns, and 14 of those have come on the ground. Still, there is room for improvement in the running game, as Auburn is averaging a lackluster 3.9 ypc. As for the passing game, the Tigers are gaining a solid 12.1 yards per completion. Still, Brandon Cox has thrown only four touchdowns against seven interceptions. Brad Lester is back in the lineup for Auburn, and he ran for a pair of touchdowns in the romp over Vanderbilt last weekend. Ben Tate and Mario Fannin also added rushing scores, and all three tailbacks figure to get touches this weekend. As for Cox, he was an efficient 14-of-17 for 165 yards and a touchdown.
Auburn's defense has played well thus far, as the club is limiting opponents to 17.0 ppg and 293.3 total ypg. Stopping the run has been a strength of the squad, as foes are managing a lackluster 3.3 rushing ypc. The pass defense has been strong as well, giving up only nine yards per completion. Chris Evans leads the AU defense in tackles with 35, and Antonio Coleman is tops with three sacks. Auburn surrendered only seven points last weekend to Vanderbilt, and the lone touchdown for the Commodores came late in the fourth quarter long after the outcome had been decided. The Tigers surrendered just 221 total yards, including 88 passing yards. Expect standout defensive end Quentin Groves to miss another week with a toe injury.
Arkansas possesses the nation's premier backfield duo in Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, and it is the opinion of many that McFadden is college football's top player. In the win over Tennessee-Chattanooga last weekend, McFadden ran for one score while Jones added two touchdowns. The Razorbacks finished with a modest total of 373 total yards, but 257 of those did come on the ground. Jones posted 141 yards on 13 carries, while McFadden added 122 yards on his 25 carries. Fullback Peyton Hillis led the team with 56 yards on five catches, and he did score a receiving touchdown. Casey Dick is the team's quarterback, and he isn't asked to do much more than protect the ball and keep opposing defenses honest. Arkansas was averaging 44.8 ppg and 541.2 total ypg heading into the UTC game, and the team clearly fell short of that mark. For the season, McFadden has rushed for just under 800 yards with seven touchdowns. As for Jones, he is averaging well over 10 yards per carry and has five rushing scores.
It is hard to imagine Arkansas playing any better against the pass than it did against Tennessee-Chattanooga last weekend. The Razorbacks permitted only 4- of-22 passes to be completed for a grand total of 11 yards, staggering figures by any standards. They allowed 161 rushing yards, but it took the Mocs 41 carries to reach that total. Of those 161 rushing yards, 65 yards came on one long touchdown run. Other than that play, the UA defense was tremendous. Heading into last weekend's game against UTC, Arkansas was surrendering 29.0 ppg and 397.5 total ypg, so the defense certainly did better than its average. Still, it is important to keep in mind that the level of competition was not particularly high.
