Steve Spurrier has done an outstanding job with his Gamecocks, as they carry a 5-1 record into this weekend's game. They are fresh off a 38-23 decision over previously unbeaten Kentucky and own a 3-1 record in the ultra-competitive SEC. The remaining schedule is favorable, as even a matchup with powerhouse Florida will take place at home.
North Carolina won its season opener under first-year coach Butch Davis before losing four in a row. Three of the four losses came by seven or fewer points, but rather than get discouraged, the team remained focused and upset Miami last weekend by a 33-27 final. It will be interesting to see if that win has lifted the confidence level of the Heels heading into this weekend's tilt.
North Carolina holds a commanding 34-16-4 advantage in the all-time series with South Carolina.
Heading into last weekend's game against Kentucky, all the talk centered around the Wildcats' star quarterback, Andre Woodson. By the end of the game, however, the quarterback who put forth the better showing was South Carolina freshman signal caller Chris Smelley. In the fourth quarter, Smelley threw a pair of touchdown passes to put the game away. He finished 17-of-30 for 256 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, showing a great deal of poise for a young and still inexperienced player. South Carolina is scoring 29.0 ppg while gaining 360.0 total ypg. Smelley has taken over the starting spot from veteran Blake Mitchell, and he has played fairly well in the lead role. The rookie has completed 54.2 percent of his passes for 810 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions. Keep an eye on Kenny McKinley, who has caught five scoring passes this season. The ground attack is led by the duo of Cory Boyd and Mike Davis who have combined for 770 yards and nine touchdowns.
Make no mistake, limiting Kentucky to 23 points last weekend was a huge accomplishment for the South Carolina defense. Eric Norwood had the type of game that most defenders only dream of. The reigning National Defensive Player of the Week returned a fumble for a touchdown in the first quarter and did the same in the third quarter. South Carolina made Woodson look uncomfortable and confused, something that most other opponents have failed to do, so plenty of credit is owed. Opponents are scoring just 16.8 ppg against the Gamecocks, who have been one of the better defensive teams in the nation this season. While there is certainly room for improvement against the run, the pass defense has been stellar. Emanuel Cook leads Spurrier's club with 37 total tackles, two more than Norwood.
North Carolina racked up 33 points against Miami last weekend, 27 of which were scored in the first half. All three touchdowns came on the ground, including a 39-yard run by Anthony Elzy and a 54-yard scamper by Brandon Tate. The Tar Heels ran for 183 yards and finished with 401 total yards in the tilt. T.J. Yates, the team's quarterback, completed 15-of-23 passes for 218 yards with no interceptions. This season, North Carolina is scoring 23.5 ppg while posting 336.7 total ypg. The ground game can certainly stand some improvement, as it is accounting for just 104.2 ypg on 2.9 ypc. Fortunately, big plays have been made in the passing game, as the Heels are racking up 13.8 yards per completion. Yates has completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 1,386 yards with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. As for Elzy, he has four rushing scores.
Last weekend, the Tar Heels held Miami scoreless the entire first half. Perhaps feeling a bit overconfident, the defense collapsed in the third quarter, surrendering three touchdowns in the frame, including a 97-yard scoring pass. Fortunately, the unit regrouped and played well in the fourth quarter, allowing just one touchdown in the closing minutes that was the culmination of an 11- yard drive. North Carolina is allowing 25.2 ppg this season and 358.2 total ypg. The Tar Heels have played fairly well against both the run and the pass, but there is room for improvement in both areas. Durell Mapp is a force for the defense, as he has made 62 total tackles, 26 more than his closest teammate. Deunta Williams has intercepted three passes, while Hilee Taylor has posted 9.5 TFLs, including six sacks.
