Missouri has won its first five games this season, including last weekend's 41-6 romp over a strong Nebraska squad. The 35-point margin of victory over the Huskers was the greatest for Mizzou in this series since 1947. The Tigers also beat Illinois in week one, and the Illini are now ranked and undefeated in Big Ten play. This weekend's game, however, figures to be the toughest test yet.
Oklahoma crushed the first four teams on its schedule, and after a shocking loss to Colorado to fall to 4-1, the Sooners got back on track with a 28-21 decision over arch-rival Texas last weekend. The remaining schedule is quite favorable for Bob Stoops' club, as this weekend's tilt and a late matchup with Texas A&M will both take place at home.
Oklahoma owns a commanding 63-23-5 advantage in the all-time series with Missouri, including wins in 16 of the last 17 meetings.
Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel was nothing short of sensational in the victory over Nebraska last weekend. He completed 33-of-47 passes for a career- high 401 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Daniel was also the team's most successful ground gainer in the tilt, as he rushed 11 times for 72 yards and two more touchdowns. Martin Rucker led the receivers with 109 yards and a touchdown on nine catches. Missouri is averaging 41.8 ppg and 556.6 total ypg this season as one of the top offensive teams in all of college football. It may be time to start giving Daniel some mention in the discussion of legitimate Heisman candidates, as he has completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 1,712 yards and 15 touchdowns with only four interceptions. Rucker leads the club with 38 catches for 439 yards, while the ground attack is paced by Tony Temple's 351 yards. Temple injured his ankle last weekend, and he is listed as questionable for Saturday's tilt.
Missouri struggled at times defensively through the first four games of the season, so the fact that the defense limited Nebraska to six points and 297 total yards last weekend was shocking. The Tigers were tremendous against the run, surrendering a mere 74 rushing yards. The pass defense was strong as well, allowing less than nine yards per completion. Opponents are posting 21.2 ppg and 407.0 total ypg against Missouri, numbers that were worse before last weekend's strong effort. The Tigers have allowed 12 touchdowns to opposing offenses in five games, with six scores coming on the ground. Sean Weatherspoon leads the defense with 47 total tackles, and Stryker Sulak is tops with three sacks. Williams Moore and Cornelius Brown have intercepted two passes apiece.
Sam Bradford threw three touchdown passes last weekend to lead Oklahoma to the victory over Texas. Bradford completed 21-of-32 passes for 244 yards, and Juaquin Iglesias led the team with six catches. Malcolm Kelly posted five grabs for 105 yards and a touchdown, while both of Jermaine Gresham's catches went for scores. Clearly, there is no shortage of talented options in the passing game. As for the ground attack, DeMarco Murray ran for 128 yards and one touchdown. Oklahoma is racking up 49.7 ppg and 482.2 total ypg, as the offense has been tremendous productive and balanced. With 19 passing touchdowns and 18 rushing scores, this squad can get it done both on the ground and through the air. Murray has rushed for 444 yards and nine touchdowns, while Allen Patrick is close behind with 411 yards and five scores. Bradford has completed a stellar 70.7 percent of his passes for 1,423 yards and 18 touchdowns with only four interceptions. As for the receivers, Iglesias leads the pack with 35 catches for 558 yards, while Kelly has eight receiving touchdowns.
Oklahoma surrendered 385 total yards and three touchdowns to Texas last weekend. The Sooners struggled to defend the pass, as the Longhorns racked up 324 yards through the air while gaining a staggering 17.1 yards per completion. Oklahoma was much better against the run, yielding only 2.1 ypc. Opponents are managing just 15.8 ppg against the Sooners, who are permitting 283.8 total ypg this season. Stopping the run has been a strength of the club, as it is holding foes to 66.5 rushing ypg and 1.9 ypc. While there have been some big pass plays surrendered, Oklahoma has 10 interceptions to its credit to go along with 22 sacks. Curtis Lofton leads the club with 64 total tackles, 20 more than his closest teammate. As for Auston English, he is tops with six sacks.
