The Bearcats enter the game fresh off their biggest win of the season, as they upended then nationally-ranked Rutgers, 28-23, in their Big East opener last weekend. The win improved Cincinnati to 6-0 on the season, marking its best start since going 8-0 in 1954. Dating back to last season, the Bearcats have now won nine straight games and that is the second longest winning streak in the nation behind LSU. The team however, still has a long way to go to break the school record of 16 wins in a row set over the 1953-54 seasons.
As for Louisville, many expected it to be the undefeated team heading into this game, but that certainly isn't the case. As a matter of fact, the Cardinals were dealt another blow last week, dropping a 44-35 decision to Utah on October 5th. It was the third loss in the past four games for Louisville, which is in danger of falling below .500 at 3-3. The Cardinals have played just one league game thus far, a 38-35 setback to Syracuse on September 22nd. Saturday's game will be the annul battle for the Keg of Nails between these I-71 rivals.
Cincinnati leads the all-time series with Louisville, 26-19-1, but the Cardinals have won the last four meetings, including a 23-17 triumph in 2006.
The Cardinals' offense has lived up to expectations this season and can hardly be faulted for team's poor start, as they are averaging a healthy 44.0 ppg behind an impressive 578.3 total ypg. Quarterback Brian Brohm has been simply phenomenal for Louisville this season, completing 66.8 percent of his tosses for 2,415 yards, 20 touchdowns and just four interceptions. In last week's loss to Utah, Brohm was once again spectacular, as he converted on 39-of-58 throws for 467 yards and four touchdowns. What made last week's performance even more impressive was the fact that Brohm was without the services of his top two wideouts in Harry Douglas and Mario Urrutia. The duo have combined for 65 catches, 1,078 yards and seven touchdowns this season, but they are both listed as questionable for this weekend due to injuries. Gary Barnidge however, will be available and the tight end is as good as they come. Last week Barnidge hauled in eight balls for 93 yards and a score in a losing cause to Utah. For the year, Barnidge has caught 28 passes for 370 yards and a team- high six touchdowns and those numbers will surely improve this weekend.
On the defensive side of the ball is where Louisville has been heavily criticized this season and for good reason. Coming into the game, the Cardinals have had little success slowing down their opponents, giving up 30.7 ppg and 444.5 total ypg. The unit has really struggled against the pass, surrendering 283.3 ypg through the air with 13 touchdowns against just four interceptions. Getting to opposing quarterbacks has also been a problem, as Louisville has recorded just nine sacks in six games. Last week, this unit was burned by Utah for 582 total yards, including 322 through the air. The defense allowed Utah to convert 25-of-33 pass attempts, as it spent over 34 minutes of the game on the field. Lamar Myles paced the Cardinals in defeat with 16 tackles and a forced fumble. He has been one of the few bright spots for this defense, as his 66 tackles is more than double the next closest player on the team.
The Bearcats have shown some explosiveness on the offensive side of the ball themselves this season, as they are currently averaging a hardy 43.3 ppg and 445.3 total ypg. The team has been effective with its ground attack (185.8 ypg) as well as its passing game (259.5 ypg) and that helps explain the high scoring average. Against a tough Rutgers' defense last weekend, Cincinnati racked up 407 yards of total offense, including 150 on the ground, in a 28-23 win. Quarterback Ben Mauk did most of the damage, as he completed 20-of-37 pass attempts for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Mauk has done everything asked of him this season, completing 65.0 percent his throws for 1,034 yards. He has thrown for 12 touchdowns and just three interceptions in his five games played. Marcus Barnett has emerged as a primary target for Mauk and he leads the team with 28 catches, 352 receiving yards and six scores. Last weekend, Barnett hauled in six balls for 74 yards and a touchdown. Butler Benton and Greg Moore have formed a nice one-two punch in the backfield for the Bearcats and they have combined for 635 rushing yards and four scores this season.
The difference between the Bearcats and Cardinals comes on defense, where Cincinnati has done a solid job in holding its opponents to a mere 12.7 ppg and 340.2 total ypg. The Bearcats have been especially tough against the run, yielding just 85.0 ypg and one touchdown on the ground this season. Creating turnovers is another area of strength for Cincinnati, which has forced 25 miscues, including 16 interceptions. Last weekend, the Bearcats gave up 432 total yards to Rutgers, but they made up for that by forcing four turnovers. Three of those turnovers came on interceptions, including one in the red zone while Rutgers was trying to win the game in the closing moments. Haruki Nakamura notched nine tackles in the game and he also came up with an interception. He currently leads the team with 37 tackles, while Mike Mickens is tops on the squad with four interceptions.
