The Ducks have had two weeks to stew about their only loss of the season, a 31-24 setback to California on September 29th. The loss dropped the team to 1-1 in league play.
The Cougars have been snake-bitten in conference action this year (0-3) and that includes a 23-20 setback to nationally-ranked Arizona State last weekend.
The Ducks hold a narrow 39-38-7 edge in the all-time series with Washington State, although the Cougars have captured three of the last five meetings. Six of the last seven meetings have taken place in Pullman. WSU's last visit to Autzen Stadium resulted in a surprising 55-16 rout for the Cougars in 2003.
The Cougars amassed 451 yards of total offense, but could not get the victory over the Sun Devils last weekend. The majority of that yardage came via the pass, as QB Alex Brink completed 27-of-50 passes, for 369 yards, with two TDs and one INT. On the season, the numbers have been similar, with WSU boasting one of the nation's top passing attacks. The team is averaging 307.7 yards passing per game, with Brink completing 64.8 percent of his passes, for 1,828 yards and 17 TDs. The top target downfield has been Brandon Gibson, who leads the team in receptions (39), receiving yards (567) and TDs (six). Brink spreads the wealth, with two others hauling in over 30 balls this year in Michael Bumpus (36 receptions, for 418 yards and three TDs) and Jed Collins (31 receptions, for 263 yards and three TDs). The ground game is an afterthought, although sophomore RB Dwight Tardy (71.3 ypg, 4.1 ypc) has been effective at times.
A lack of defense has been the main culprit in Pullman this season, as WSU is allowing 34.2 ppg. Opponents are gaining huge chunks of yardage both on the ground (152.5 ypg) and through the air (278.2 ypg) on this defense. The unit has forced 12 turnovers and collected 15 sacks thus far. Junior linebacker Greg Trent currently leads the Cougars in tackles with 51 total stops. Senior free safety Husain Abdullah ranks third in stops (38), but is responsible for a third (3) of the team's nine INTs. Sophomore linebacker Andy Mattingly is the top producer upfield. Of his 35 total tackles, five have been for losses, with four sacks.
As one of the top offensive units in the nation, Oregon will certainly present a challenge for WSU's porous defense this weekend. The Ducks are sixth in the nation in scoring (43.6 ppg), getting it done both on the ground and through the air. The team is fourth nationally in rushing (276.6 ypg) and with another 252.2 yards passing, the team is sixth in the nation in total offense (528.8 ypg). Quarterback Dennis Dixon is one of the nation's top duel threats. He has completed a deadly 69.5 percent of his passes this year, for 1,245 yards, with 12 TDs and just two INTs. He is also averaging 5.4 yards per carry and has amassed 301 yards and five TDs on the ground. Junior tailback Jonathan Stewart is one of the Pac-10's top runners. He is averaging a robust 7.2 yards per carry thus far, while rumbling for 623 yards and five TDs on the year. Wideout Jaison Williams is off to another fast start, leading the team in receptions (22), receiving yards (337) and TDs (four).
Like a lot of Pac-10 teams, Oregon is far more advanced offensively, than defensively. The Ducks are allowing 23.4 ppg this year and are allowing a rather generous 407.8 yards of total offense per outing. The rush defense is yielding 154.8 yards per game on 4.0 yards per carry, while the pass defense is giving up 253.0 yards per game. Senior free safety Matthew Harper leads the defense in tackles (55), with one sack, one interception and one forced fumble. He is joined in the secondary by junior safety Patrick Chung (46 tackles, two INTs) and sophomore cornerback Jairus Byrd (27 tackles, two INTs). Junior defensive end Nick Reed has made the most of his opportunities along the defensive line. Of his 15 total tackles, eight have come behind the line of scrimmage and four have been sacks.
