Grothe and South Florida destroy UCF

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Matt Grothe threw a pair of touchdown passes and added a pair of scores on the ground, leading fifth-ranked South Florida to a 64-12 rout of UCF at Raymond James Stadium.

Grothe completed 15-of-28 passes for 212 yards without an interception and led the Bulls with 100 rushing yards. South Florida (6-0) was not caught looking ahead to Thursday's Big East matchup at Rutgers and notched its largest margin of victory this season.

"He broke some tackles which was really big," USF coach Jim Leavitt said of Grothe. "They had people in position to make plays, they just didn't make plays on the ball."

UCF's Kevin Smith entered the game leading the nation in rushing at 172.0 yards per game, but was held to a mere 55 on 18 carries. He also caught three passes for 45 yards. The Golden Knights (3-3), who beat NC State and lost a close one at Texas to start the year, dropped their second straight game.

South Florida totally dominated, outgaining UCF 543-145.

"They came out and won the line-of-scrimmage game and basically really took our offense out of flight in the run game and the pass game," UCF coach George O'Leary said. "They did a heck of a job. So, I salute the South Florida defense."

The Bulls got the first break of the game early in the first quarter when Joe Burnett fumbled on a punt return and South Florida regained possession at the UCF 27. The turnover led to a 34-yard field goal by Delbert Alvarado for a 3-0 lead.

Kyle Israel was then picked off by Mike Jenkins on UCF's next series and the Bulls needed four plays to find the end zone. A 34-yard pass from Grothe to Taurus Johnson set up Mike Ford's three-yard touchdown run to make it 10-0 midway through the opening period.

The Knights answered with a 56-yard drive for a touchdown. Smith did most of the work with six carries for 37 yards, but a 17-yard run by Curtis Francis also aided the series, which Israel capped with a two-yard scoring run.

After a South Florida punt pinned UCF at its own three-yard line, Smith was tackled in the end zone for a safety to give the Bulls a 12-7 advantage with 2:22 remaining in the first quarter.

Israel fumbled on the next UCF possession and the Bulls recovered at the Knights' 20-yard line in the final minute of the first. South Florida again found the end zone soon after, as Grothe scored on a six-yard run on the first play of the second quarter to increase the lead to 19-7.

The teams traded field goals later in the period, as Michael Torres booted a 35-yarder for UCF and Alvarado connected from 33 yards away.

Following Alvarado's kick, which came with just 90 seconds to play in the half, the Bulls forced a quick UCF punt and took over on offense at its own 31 with 1:03 remaining.

Grothe threw a pair of quick passes and added runs of 26 and 10 yards before connecting with Johnson on a nine-yard touchdown pass in the back left corner of the end zone just two seconds before intermission, giving South Florida a 29-10 cushion.

The Bulls poured it on with a pair of third-quarter scores to make it 43-10, as Grothe finished an eight-play, 64-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run and threw a seven-yard TD pass to Cedric Hill to complete an 81-yard series.

Backup quarterback Grant Gregory got into the act with a nine-yard scoring toss to Johnson early in the fourth quarter.

UCF added a safety late in the game when Aston Samuels was tackled in the end zone, but South Florida tacked on a pair of touchdowns on a 75-yard pass from Gregory to Carlton Mitchell and a 28-yard toss from Anthony Severino to Jessie Hester.

Game Notes
